Thinking about starting a niche e-commerce site. Storing inventory is not an option.

Hello all,

I am considering starting a e-commerce website selling niche products. I cannot warehouse the products, so drop shipping would be the way I need to go.

I know it depends upon the product and the suppliers. However in general, is drop shipping a feasible way to start a small e-commerce site?

I know what types of products I would like to sell. I am still not certain of the individual products.

I would appreciate any advice anyone has a regards to either using drop shipping suppliers or starting your first e-commerce website.

If you can't warehouse the products, drop shipping is definitely the option to use.

Now you'll just need to research the different companies that carry the products you plan to offer.

In addition to dropshipping, you might want to consider fulfilment. Various companies offer fulfilment services - it's basically where you ship physical stock (in bulk) to the fulfilment warehouse, they then store and ship the stock for you as it sells.

I know people who use fulfilment services - and we even offer fulfilment services for a few friends with small ecommerce businesses - it works great. Typically, fulfilment companies will charge a monthly fee to cover the storage of stock, and then a fee per item shipped to cover the shipping and packaging of the item.

If you want a "hands off" solution, some fulfilment companies now have facilities where you can automate the shipping of products straight through your ecommerce CMS - I know Shopify has this function with a few fulfilment providers.

Dropshipping is a good way, but you have to give yourself a USP and not just be another clone of a clone of a clone, like most dropshipping websites are.

Fulfilment can be expensive so I would go for dropshipping but come up with that thing that is different about you (and don't let it be price).
