Best Ecommerce Platform? WordPress & WooCommerce Vs. Alternative?

I swear by WordPress, but when it comes to e-commerce websites I have been having issues with compatibility & theme/plugins not working with each other and new WP versions. Is this a pretty common issue with everyone else, or is it just me? Either way, does anyone have alternative recommendations on other platforms that abide by the following criteria:

1) Functional Reliability (not constantly having to update things and worry about issues)

2) Search engine friendly (allowing search engine friendly/clean URL structures not numbered, etc)

Any alternative advice from other e-commerce website owners.

Thanks in advance!

Josh

That is why they have the software as a service carts. There are tons of them including:

    Shopify
    BigCommerce
    Americommerce
    CoreCommerce
    3dCart

This is just to name a few. Pay a monthly fee and spend your time marketing instead of updating plugins, trouble shooting themes or worrying about security breaches.

If you still insist on wordpress, I have been eyeing cart66 more and more as it does have a ton of functionality.

I like and use Opencart myself. With a few mods you can make it do whatever you want without constant updates. Search engine friendly yes, with a few changes.

It is free except for a few mods I paid for that were well worth it.

I use opencart too and it is alright. I dont think any small or medium size store needs to by a paid store software, free kind can do all basic.

  • The company I work for integrates with Shopify, Bigcommerce, Magento, 3dCart and ZenCart. They are all great choices - it really comes down to how much you're willing to spend, how comfortable you are tweaking the site yourself and your target market (i.e. Shopify theme designs are really well suited for fashion, home décor, accessories, and other products that rely on visual appeal to drive purchase).

I haven't had any compatibility problems with WooCommerce and WooCommerce extensions. I don't use a lot of other plugins with my WooCommerce shops as I haven't found any that are necessary, however I have tried All in One SEO, Yoast, Sitemap, etc. and they all work with no compatibility problems, so not sure what you are using that is incompatible.

I have experienced the upgrade compatibility headaches with WooCommerce & Wordpress. What I have found is that if you use a WooThemes theme, you're much better off when either the theme, WordPress, or WooCommerce releases an update. If you're using any other theme, you're at risk of something breaking every time one of those three gets updated. It's definitely something to consider.

However, for the budget conscious, who also want a robust website platform, WooCommerce/WordPress is hard to beat.

I've used OpenCart and Magenta, which are of course also very budget friendly. But they leave a LOT to be desired on the content management side of things. (pretty much any part of your site that is not product pages or shopping cart) I've tried setting up blogs on both of these platforms and it's a pain in the arse.

I like to use WHMCS e-commerce platform. Yes, it designed for the web hosting resellers, but you can use it as a simple shopping cart solution.

      Advantages;

      - simple, but flexible and powerful
      - all major payment gateways
      - built-in ticket support system
      - built-in affiliate program
      - product add-ons and custom fields

Wordpress + WooCommerce is my choice for small shop (you need at least 4-5 additional plugins to make it work properly.)

And in my opinion, OpenCart is the best eCommerce platform and your first choice for WP alternative.

Shopify is great but when it comes to flexibility, WP with WooCommerce or Magento are better. Magento is very heavy on resources however and there are many benefits to choosing a paid-for service with regards to not having to worry about maintenance.

There's much to be said for all the above mentioned. It comes down to what suites you best.
As for WP and WooCommerce or any cart for that matter, I found it best, with good reason, to stay a revision or two behind and not jump on installing the latest right away. Especially major revisions.
It's rare you don't see an update to the revision such as 2.01 etc within a few weeks or couple months
and in the case of Woo, sometimes days.
    Cheers

I am a big wordpress fan and I use it myself and for many of my clients that I build sites for. The problem, is that overall, even with woocommerce, I have never had the success that I do with opencart as far as customizations, and sales. You can always add a cms to your store, and it can still be wordpress!

I agree with what OnlineStoreHelp said above, you are better off going with a hosted solution like BigCommerce or 3DCart and spending your time marketing your business rather than being your own IT guy that has to update the platform, update the theme, patch security holes, etc. Pay a small monthly fee for a hosted platform and let your provider deal with all that nonsense while you focus on building your brand and driving traffic & sales!

This, this ,this. I want to spend time either selling stuff, buying stuff to sell, or marketing my stores. I want to spend as little time possible on the backend as possible. $25/month is cheap as hell to make sure this happens. I guarantee the time spent on that stuff every month is much more in your time invested.

Chiming in late to this Forum thread. Full disclosure, I Laurentiu work at Bigcommerce.

@anny1985 @OnlineStoreHelp: @tiana @Dave: Thanks so much for the mentions.

There's pros and cons with any platform- opensource or SaaS. It ultimately depends on the needs of your specific business. Since you specifically mentioned compatibility and maintenance, some of the biggest advantages with a SaaS platform, such as Bigcommerce, is that we handle all that for you, including PCI compliance, security, hosting, etc. We take care of the important security and compliance stuff for you so it frees up your time to focus on what you do best- i.e. growing your business.

I just moved to WP and Woocommerce from Opencart.

Opencart was fine without any addons or themes, but as soon as I installed a theme the site got super slow.

Also I just find opencart hard to customize visually.

It also takes about an hour to add one product.

I would try one of the others, or if you have the cash, Shopify.

Guys i had a question regarding opencart how deep you need to know about coding ranging from Html, CSS, Java scrip, j query and php. I am not very good with coding but if thats what it take in order for me to be able to customize open cart i will do that like i have a choice. Since i want to save the money from paying monthly fee which it might be risky for me since i did not know if the product would sell to cover all the expanses and inventory and many other. Please please anyone give me a rough idea what is the necessary thing need to understand or at least just enough in coding for you to be able to customize it to your design preference thank you.

I'm really happy with my Zen cart store. If you can think of something you want added there's usually a addon for that. Support forum is friendly and helpful should you need it.
If you want a customized look you can get one of many free or premium templates that are easy to install, but some php knowledge is helpful for tweaking things/installing add-ons
I like having total control of my site and wouldn't like to use a managed solution but it all depends on what you want.

Magento has no limit on the amount of categories or products you can sell and has endless customization options. The another advantage of Magento is advanced SEO features, which is helpful in driving traffic to your store
Magento has an ability to manage a multi-store website all from one single admin panel and allows you to manage several different stores with different products, stock locations, price and more

At first glance, the launch of a platform for e-commerce may seem expensive now. Fortunately, there are plenty of CMS for an online store with open source, which is not only free, but also offer the possibility of flexible configuration, scalability and support for the community, which cannot always be found in corporate decisions:

Of course, the decision to give preference to free a platform for e-commerce, when you are making your first steps in the online marketplace, seems obvious. However, the choice of optimal platform is much more complex. In the end, they all have different strengths and weaknesses.

I'm introducing you to 10 free CMS for an online store:
    1. Magento Community Edition
    2. PrestaShop
    3. Openkart
    4. oskommerche
    5. Zen Maps
    6. Spree Commercial
    7. WooCommerce (WordPress)
    8. Jigoshop (WordPress)
    9. VirtueMart (Joomla)
    10. Drupal Commerce (Drupal)

I read a post on Magenticians blog regarding Magento vs WooCommerce comparison. I am going to summarize what I read there. Keeping in mind the functionality and seo friendliness, I think the best alternative you might want is Magento. Among ecommerce platform, Magento has more features and customization functionality. Some features are, product browsing, catalogue browsing, shipping, payment order mangement, etc. You dont have constantly update Magento either. It also has all the necessary search engine optimization features like meta tags, page speed optimization, site architecture, etc.
