How important is the .com for new ecommerce?

We are in the early stages of setting up a new ecommerce site related to home inventory. We have always used .com domains, however with limited .com inventory available, we are looking into other options.

I would appreciate some input into how you feel about launching new sites without a .com. With all the changes Google has recently made, negatively affecting organic traffic for small-medium sized entrepreneurial businesses, does it even matter anymore? If not a .com, what's the next best?

Google has made it clear that the new TLDs will not be disadvantaged in their rankings.

The bigger question is will the public accept it?

Many people believe the new TLDs will fail, but they are wrong. With the introduction of so many new options, and the probability that new ones will continue to come into the marketplace, it is not a matter of if they will catch on, but when. Clearly, we are not quite there yet.

If you dig, you'll find that many of the top brands in the world are backing the new system. They have billions to spend, and they are patient.

As more companies begin to use and promote the new TLDs, they will chip away at .com's psychological stranglehold. At some point in the foreseeable future, people will pay as much attention to what is after the dot as to what is before it. Either that, or they'll ignore it entirely and just use search.

Either way, in the next few years, .com won't seem so prevalent the way it has been over the last couple of decades.

So, should you invest now? Maybe. Do you have a long term plan for this business?

If you do, be prepared to spend a bit extra to make sure people understand that this is your branding choice. Make it bold and you can make it work.

If you choose not to, nobody would blame you. But you are relegating yourself to the ever deeper chasm of long tail oblivion the remaining .com inventory has become. Unless you choose a great brandable or pay a bunch for a great name on the aftermarket (both perfectly wonderful options).

History will reward you for the good decisions you make now.

I currently use a .club for our niche wine club and it does not seem to hurt us in any way. In some ways it can be easier to remember...a domain name should not make our break any project.

I think the .co domain is pretty cool. Especially when you name your brand or business with the word company.

For a (fake) example: Beast Athletic Company = beastathletic.co

.com is still pretty much critical in my mind. It's just etched in peoples minds yet, and people will default to it. you don't want to spend marketing $$ only to have someone go to the .com, obviously marketing includes links but many other times the customer is going by memory at a later time.

I think that a .com is effectively a great thing to have as people write .com by default but

Some website have lot of success without a .com, example slashdot.org

I also don't think a .com should make or break a business but it is certain that it help with branding as it's the default choice for many peoples.

  • .COM is still the leader. People remember easily a .com domain, even they only remeber yourdomainname, they will associate it with .com. But new TLDs seem to be convenient, for example 'follow.me'.

I would never use another extension for an ecommerce store. It's worth doing your homework and finding a .com. Resale value is a factor to consider as well as public acceptance ... no one except web developers and domainers are familiar with all the crazy extensions available now. You want the general public to remember your domain name.

As others have said, the extension doesn't matter when it comes to ranking in Google. We always go with a .com, simply because it looks the most professional and trustworthy to visitors, and professional+trustworthy translates to higher CTRs and conversion rates.

As many users rightly said, domain extension has nothing to do with SEO and ranking, but users by default extends .com after any domain. So this is one factor you should consider. But as there is unavailability of your preferred domain. I would recommend you to use your preferred domain.

Just make a quick google search and analyze the top results in your niche. you will come to one conclusion. use .com if possible!

Exceptions: if you will sell in a specific country only, you can use country related extension. if you can't find the right .com and it gets ridiculous, use .net.

But at the end: what ever happens, use .COM!

I believe TLD's are just for users preference and has nothing to do with Google.

Well, selecting a .com domain name which relates to your product niche, is really important for a good marketing strategy. This kind of domain gives a prospect how different kind of user interacted with your sites. With different domain purchasing sites such as godaddy, Bigrock, you can easily get the .com domain in reasonable rate.

  • We are buying the new tlds like mad. For example we have weightloss.report which will (someday) be a newsletter. The good .coms are mostly gone imho and it is time to move on. I think the public will get used to them soon.
