I do not think it is a question of one or the other, Yes wordpress is very popular but it is a blog after all. Joomla, I never managed to get my head around. HTML or PHP can create great sites and the basics are easy to learn.

If you are offering web design services you need to offer what the client wants and I find it strange that you are asking the question in this forum

Neither! Self-hosting is a huge mistake for small-to-medium ecommerce businesses. I would only self-host and create a customized storefront if I were a household name or multi-million dollar retailer. Why spend your time & energy on hosting settings, plugins, updates, security, etc. when you could be spending it on marketing and growing your business?

There are cheap solutions like Ultra-Cart, which does pretty much all the things you need and they have great support. Great API connections as well and lot's of Up-time. which is nice..

I'd take WooCommerce any day over Joomla. Much friendlier platform and has an extension available for just about anything you want to do.

Sorry if i disagree but a better option for a small or medium ecommerce website is Prestashop a lot of features, does not need a lot of resources so initially can be installed in a "decent" shared hosting service.

I would select the proper platform for the job. I have developed custom templates for all of these platforms, Wordpress and Joomla are good CMS but are not make for ecommerce like somebody already mentioned. Personally I wouldn't trust wordpress with security, considering how much they are target of constant attacks.

I have to agree with @Soluweb, Prestashop is a good, easy to manage platform. Also I would consider Magento if you are planning on growing. Magento is good for scalability.

It would seem that Paul is missing in action, I cannot understand why someone starts a thread to which people provide their opinions and then they can't be bothered to acknowledge or reply. I have notice that this seems to be happening more often these days and is diluting the value of the forum.

Wordpress is better IMHO and ifastnet.com is able to satisfy all your demands in this way.
