Confusion About Custom Site Building

When a web designer says that he or she can build a custom site what does that mean exactly? Don't you still need to choose a platform/shopping cart like magento, shopify, or one of the many others to at least provide the software needed to run an ecommerce business? I guess my question is what does custom mean? Please reply, thanks!

    Customization is when you ask them to change something in the code behind the scene of a popular CMS (Wordpress, drupal, shopify...) It can be easily done by experts and freelancers.
    You yourself can change the pre-made templates, but to custom it the way it looks/interferes/works.. you'll need a coder and that's what is a customization

    But in you question said to build a custom website, if you mean to build it from scratch (without using known CMS, this is gonna be hard, and you will need a professional company / coders who can do it, and don't assume it to be cheap, unless you have a website basic idea.

    But the general developers online won't do a from scratch custom website, they prefer to make easy bucks doing easy sites.

    Yes, a "custom" solution is usually when a coder/designer takes a CMS and "bare bones" template and modifies it to your liking and preferences.

    FYI, if you are building an ecommerce store I wouldn't even consider this option. For the amount you would pay for this you could pay for a solid hosted shopping cart (i.e. bigcommerce, 3dcart or shopify) for 12+ months. With those solutions you can choose a pre-built theme and just roll with it. Custom solutions typically only make sense for large, branded ecommerce companies and other types of websites, but it usually makes the most sense to just use a hosted solution for most standard ecommerce stores (especially when it's a startup and you haven't even proven the concept yet, why pour money into it before you have?).
