Is there still opportunity with regular sporting goods?

Quick back story.. I started a simple ecommerce site on Bigcommerce while I was still in school (naive), the site sells running/athletic goods (branded not imported). I had some dumb luck with a few random products but not enough sales to support myself. I am now at a cross roads where I would like to be a full time entrepreneur and either need to find a way to scale this small business or leave it behind and pursue other things.

My question is... Is there still opportunity to build a decent ecommerce operation in a saturated niche like running / sporting goods? I am not suggesting my own brand of goods but rather selling the same shoes and clothes that can be found at Dicks Sporting Goods and on Zappos..

Any input is appreciated.

We compete against retailers like that in all sorts of niches, so the quick answer would be YES.

That said, it might make sense to find a niche within that market to focus your efforts on. If you can become the "specialty shop" for a product line within that bigger market, you can do extremely well.

You may want to look at Amazon's FBA business model. It may work for you as their site has a huge amount of buyer traffic and they also take care of all the shipping and customer satisfaction issues. Having your own eCommerce site is good but Amazon will always out do such sites when it comes to the number of online buyers.

Completely agree with you. Amazon is the best platform by which you can easily get a huge profit by enroll with them. Apart from this, you can also get a lot more traffic in your website.
