I am about to get started with selling on amazon after buying bulk from a source. There is competition with the same exact item, probably from the same source, but I can sell it for cheaper. There is multiple private labels for this item (i think private label is if they have their brand name on it?) and a few pages of results. My few questions are these:

Is being ranked on the #1 page based off of sales or average customer reviews or both?

If I should put the same exact item for a cheaper price and maybe get 20 sales and reviews would that be able to compete with a few of the competitors with 50-200 reviews or would I still be ranked a few pages back.

Would it be worth it make my own private label for it and then try compete or how do I tell if the niche is overly saturated.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated I am just trying to learn as much as possible without paying $500 for a few webinars that are vague.

edit: one that to add as well is the product I am thinking about doing this one of the competitors has it as one of the top 15 sold items in that department

I would go with private label. You can read improving your Amazon listing in this Ebook.

Almost any product have competition, especially nowadays, with ASM buzzing since 2013.

If you are trying to sell an existing generic or brand name product, then you have to compete with the buy-box with tons of other sellers/ resellers. So to me, private labeling is the way to move forward.

As far as what it works today, manipulating the amazon algorithm is not a secret anymore. Googled and you will find tons of information. In short, it's all about spiking the algorithm with stimulated consistent sales within a short period of time, although it will work differently depending on the niche. Reviews, feedbacks do count, as it affect your conversion rate too, but I am not totally sure if it affect ranking because I have seen different results for different niches. My 2 cents.

Anyway, you have to start selling in order for you to try out and know the market.

Well, I am also in favor of erickz. He has shared the valuable information and yes, if you are thinking about to do selling on Amazon, then the private label is the best option for you. Because, as you know that there are so many folks who are continually doing marketing, so for that reason private label may help you to grow up your business.
