Amazon FBA - selling own brand t-shirts... Amazon's odd rules

Hi !

Let's say I have an LLC called "ABC LLC."

I own a t-shirt brand called "DEF."

I want to sell these t-shirts via Amazon FBA.

I don't have a UPC Barcode for this brand, and this is not a brand that they already have in their system.

Amazon needs me to register this brand with them. Fair enough.

But, to meet the conditions for approval, they apparently want me to have an email address such as sweetspot@DEF.com , and it seems they want me to have a website such as DEF.com where I already sell these t-shirts.

I find this a little odd because:
1) Not everyone necessarily already sells t-shirts via a website.
2) Not everyone necessarily has a website that corresponds to a single brand of t-shirts they make (what if they make multiple brands of t-shirts?).

Anyone have experience on this? Any suggestions on the best course of action for me here? Would it be easier if I went ahead and got the UPC Barcodes from some other party and then went to Amazon (or would they still need me to have that email address etc.)?

Thanks!

I am not sure of why they are asking you for a web site but I do not that to use there marketplace you do need to follow Amazon's rules. This does not should like too much of a demand though as you could get the domain and set up a simple site for short money in a short amount of time.

If I am reading your post correctly - it seems like you are attempting to get the UPC odes from Amazon ??? I have not done that and I did not know they would supply them. Maybe that is why they want a website for validation ? Anyways I do know that getting UPC codes elsewhere can be a simple matter and then you supply the information to Amazon.

While setting up your own e-commerce site is easy and gives you total control, it appears to me the majority of online shoppers now use Amazon and they have nearly cornered the market. I have seen my sales on my website stay even or shrink, while my Amazon sales have consistently grown. Just wanted to give my 2 cents.

Amazon's buyer traffic will dwarf the traffic of any individual's own site. The vast majority of people who are looking to buy somethin online are very familiar with Amazon.

For myself, as a consumer, I almost always go directly to Amazon to search and then buy. In addition to their huge buyer traffic they also have outstanding buyer confidence and trust. Consumers do not hesitate to buy from them.

For an individual to try to outsell in direct competition with Amazon is illogical IMO.

Why are you creating a Brand on Amazon? I don't sell clothing and I believe its a restricted category but you don't have to register your brand unless its a requirement. You can sell PL w/o brand registry. As money comes you can create your site and tackle brand registry. Again, I'm not sure if this is the way clothing does it but in other categories you don't need to do brand registry to sell your PL items.Just get a UPC code.

You may be able to speed up the process by just getting a UPC. I get mine at Speedy Barcodes, which is only $5. There are lots of competitors, it's just the first one that came up when I googled "cheap barcode" a while back.

You certainly do not need to proceed with the "brand registry" process for a private label brand in order to sell that brand on Amazon. I am still creating new brands every day and selling them on Amazon, without any hassle.

So I think the issue here maybe is because clothing is a category that needs approval thus you need to go through the brand registry process. It is true that you need a company website and email if you want to protect your brand on Amazon. You can read on more information about brand registry on Amazon Seller Central forum.

Other than that, for normal categories, you can just create any brand name (of course you need to ensure the brand name is not owed or patented), then just get a UPC code from any online authorized resellers for your product. Remember, each product variation (different color, different size, etc) must have a unique UPC code. They cost just a few bucks, I bought about 10 for less than $20. If you want, you can buy 100 for less than $5 on eBay, but I prefer to buy from authorized resellers.

Note: I just googled it, these are the categories that required approval:
