E-commerce startup needs help with traffic

Hey Guys,

I used to be in the affiliate space working for a network a few years ago and remember this website as a great resource.

I just launched an e-commerce website in the U.S. using the shopify turnkey platform and I currently have about 130 products live on the site mostly trending products, gadgets and as seen on tv products.

I only have an email list of 5000 subscribers which really arent engaged and I am getting about $100 in sales per day right now which isnt going to pay the bills or put food on the table.

I have tried facebook ads sending users to a popular product page as well as tried doing the campaign where it just sends users to my website. It didn't convert well enough to keep it going. I spent $140 and only saw 2 sales come through for $24 each.

Any suggestions from anyone on where to start off in regards to traffic and getting our email list growing?

I remember contextual traffic being cheap but not sure how it will work for eCommerce.

Please help!

I would say $100 per day is doing fairly well for only having 130 different products. I think maybe if you extend your selection you will be able to gain a little bit more in sales. Also see what people are buying and see if you are able to get them to buy more with one visit.

Are most of these returning customers?

I think it comes down into looking your numbers game like how much traffic you get, what about the conversion, how much is your margin, etc..

I think 5k highly attached subscribers is a very very cool asset that you should be able to manage, promote, and monetize..

Have you done survey of what items they're looking for before?

Have you asked them to refer their friends and family? Or maybe you did a tell-a-friend/ viral campaign to support ur traffic to bring new prospects at no cost?

If not, you really have to get into that right now, more to the 'business' side.

    What do you think?

Thanks for the great feedback. We launched on shopify so not sure if any of you have feedback in regards to SEO on shopify? I know SEO was the most popular answer in regards to us increasing our traffic. Our site can be viewed here LivingDeal | LivingDeal: Best Product Deals Online - New items added daily!

I tried facebook conversion campaign as well as boost to one of our posts that offered $5 off a makeup brush set that is $22. I didnt get any conversions or really see an increase to our revenue. I spent $100 on each campaign. is that enough for a test? Also after failed test should we optimize the existing campaign or try a new one with totally different product?

Looked at your site.. and right off the bat there are some thing I know I would change.. but lets forget about that right now, you have way bigger issues. Its your site right? so you know that it loads as Canada as the default? I live in the States and would assume you only ship to Canada. In order for me a USA customer to make a online order I would have to click the American flag in the upper right to switch stores.

And you wonder why your sales are suffering? so lets start here shall we: https://docs.shopify.com/manual/conf...itors-location FIX your location issue!

Now lets look at this page: Retro Superhero Cooking Apron, 9 Options To Choose From! Super Deals | LivingDeal USA I just picked any ol page. if THIS is what you are sending targeted traffic to, it wont convert. you need to really look at "Landing pages" read everything you can start here: https://moz.com/blog/most-entertaini...l&utm_term=fav get all comfy and have a drink and snack ready its a long read and worth every moment!

While you are on that page look at the 4th comment from the top and Oli has a link to his e-commerce landing page write up. another long read and worth every minute.

In regards to your FB testing. you are asking the wrong question. is $100 enough testing? I don't care how much you spent... its about how many impressions. if you get to 1000 impressions with no clicks and no conversion your "Bait" ( ad ) is not effective. Ill say that again IMPRESSIONS is the number you want to look at.

        Hope that Helps!

In regards to the geo location. Our u.s store and can store are on 2 different domains and shopify accounts. U.s. store is our .com and the Canadian is our .ca. I am going to reach out to our rep and still see if it's possible to automatically redirect.

My conversion ad on facebook had a reach of 18,000. I got 1 conversion for $17.

The code to do the redirect is there on the link I provided to do as you need. you would just place the code on both sites and let it do its magic!

Your ad stats.. you went 17,000 way further than you should have. IF at $100 you get 18,000 impressions you should be able to test with what $5.00 If you don't get a click and or a conversion with $5.00 you really really need to figure out the ad portion.

Once you read those articles you will understand the correlation between the ad and the offer. to be very straight forward with you here. Get the add converting traffic first, before you start working on the lander message. If in this scenario you were to ask which came first the chicken or the egg.. Traffic is first! LOL Get the traffic down and then match the ad to get the conversion on the other end!

            Best of luck!

Well, First you need tp rank well on Google SERP to increase the sales. So, you must concentrate on boosting you website's traffic in organic ways. I am sure that if your website rank well in SERP by organic search you will definitely have the plently of vistors and it may leads to conversion.

Also must concentrate of on page, your content must be unique, high quality and impressive. Because ,most of the ecommerce websites are get hit by google algorithmic updates due to low quality and duplicate content, make sure your product description is unique always. Also i think the well optimised custom ecommerce solution will make your site more professionally and may increase in revenue. There are plenty of custom solutions are available in the market choose your solution right and build a store more professionally and easily.

OK, so I am going to be a bit hard on you here because I think I know what you did, and if you did that, I don't know how you are going to grow a business for your model... The fact you are getting $100 in sales a day is impressive in its own right, because I can't see why anyone would buy from your website...

My Guess, and please let me know if I am wrong... You found an "amazing wholesaler that will dropship on your behalf. Just place the products only our site and watch the sales roll in"... You might even be using Doba or one of the other Dropshipping systems. Or just downloading a CSV and uploading it into the system.

If this is what you did, then there is no hope for this website to support you in the long run. If you look at any successful e-commerce operations, they definitely work in a niche/theme/concept. Want a great example? Look at this post from Shopify...

How We Built an Ecommerce Business from Scratch and Generated $922.16 in Revenue in 3 Days — Ecommerce Marketing Blog - Ecommerce News, Online Store Tips & More by Shopify

The problem with a site like yours, is there is already several websites that do it better than you. You might have heard of them, eBay.com, Amazon.com, Walmart.com, etc... They also have more trust than your site does. Want an example?

    This product of yours...

Pet Zoom Loungee Auto Pet Seat Cover Pet Deals | LivingDeal

    Is selling on Amazon

Amazon.com: Pet Zoom Loungee Auto Pet Seat Cover:...Amazon.com: Pet Zoom Loungee Auto Pet Seat Cover:...
For $2 less and is available with Amazon Prime.

The days of throwing up 1000 products on a site and watching the sales roll in are over, and were about 3 years ago (if not longer).

My advice, if you truly want to make a go at this, is actually re-evaluate what you want to sell, how you want to position yourself, and how you will get in front of your buyers. Read the Shopify case study, it is a fantastic idea on what to do.

If I am wrong at what you did, I apologize but my advice still stands, find your niche and position yourself that way because traffic sources and buyers are going to be all over the place with your model.

all we did was use only buyer keywords, this is important.

Use keywords such as - xyz for sale, buy xyz, xyz purchase, xyz, xyz.com. Remember to only use and hint at buyer keywords. we have done 301% ROI with just 5 keywords!.

Also you must try to use your keywords in the ad titles, body and website link for better results. The more targeted, the more results, and lower CPC with higher CTR %

    cheers. .

I just looked at your site from the view point of a potential customer. The first thing I noticed is that the theme is a bit faded. It is not high contrast but looks almost like the type of theme one might use for an adsense site where you want everything but the adsense ads to be inconspicuous. I would hire a shopify designer to develop a better looking site. First impressions really do matter.

You might also look into the captifire animated pop up ads geared to promoting shopify sites that I just launched (I am not the developer of it, I just happened to see it)

    Hi,
You have a very good number of customers basing on the number of emails you have. First things first, you are not utilizing the greatest opportunity at your disposal, the emails. Why haven't you tried email marketing so that you can improve the sales. Design a good newsletter in terms of design and get a one on one discussion with your potential customers through the emails.
Another thing you need to do is have an active social media presence. The social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter and Instagram are free sources of traffic. using them to market your products will really expand the market reach. Last thing is to make sure that your create platforms on your shopify shop where people will engage in discussions and at the long run retain them and turn them into loyal customers.

As mentioned preciously seventysix76, your site's products are quite broad in categories. This really makes ranking for ideal keyword phrases very difficult - likewise, it affects your traffic since it all comes down to keyword searches with SERP.

PPC - probably not the best option since you would have so many different keywords to bid on and not much of a way to qualify audiences for them.

SEO - SEO always works, but there is no "one" type of SEO. With On-site, make sure each page is optimized with a specific keyword, make sure you're sending the right signals to search engines, and work to establish a strong, relevant backlink portfolio through content campaigns and manual link building. With Off-site, there are numerous strategies you could utilize to increase your DA, PA, and keyword ranking. It takes some time to rank organically, though - but well worth it.

SMM - social is excellent, but like SEO, it doesn't happen overnight. You have to put in the time to find your audience, give them what they value (not what you think they value - common problem with marketers), and engage with them. If you decide to do content campaigns like blogging with your site, then you will need SMM to share/promote it - otherwise you are writing in a vacuum.

Let me know if you want more details on something, and good luck with your store!
