What's your first step and what follows? From start to launch

I think this is a simple first step question that can help most people looking to make money online. At least that's the way I feel.

How do you get your product? I think we can all learn to sell but how to get your product seems to me to be the key first step.

How many people actually create their own product via outside manufactures, buy product wholesale to sell, or even create your own digital product such as an info product?

If you buy wholesale, what are some of the hurdles you have to face?

If you create your own product via outside marketers, what kind of manufactures have you used or are you working with to create them? What kind of hurdles have you faced in terms of branding and being unique from competitors? Before you invest in your product, how do you know it's the right one? Do you run tests?

Lastly, if it's a service - What made you decide to offer it? Where there competitors doing well that you thought you could beat out?

What's your process/formula like? Hopefully you can be thorough enough. Can you give us some tips?

Hope I'm not asking for a lot haha. I have to be honest, this forum takes a lot of my time from reading through it and I'm still in the same place I was a month ago. I'm not new to startups and business but somewhat new to the IM world. I know some SEO, I can also build sites with Wordpress and Thesis, I even ran my own nightlife promotion business and done some other web stuff. I have a little bit of an idea of what's going on and think I can do exceptionally well given what I know and my work ethic but I feel like I'm stuck at step 1.

I've gotten messages and people have been generous to share their opinions. The problem, however; is moving forward. I feel like the true learning curve is in getting your hands dirty and learning as you execute. It's not my lack of effort or laziness but I think the most successful have found someone to mimic or kind of coach them through from start to launch. That's why I've asked these questions. To me, the key is to have something to sell that people will pay for. How do we find that something and execute on it no matter what it is? What's your first step?

Thank you guys!
Steve

seems like you are talking about a physical product. You should probably post this question in the ecommerce sub forum.
