I am the author of Import Direct From China, so I will be very discreet in what I write.

I strongly recommend that you do your own comparison. I suggest you look at the two websites: Welcome to Importing Riches and Proven China Sourcing (For Import Direct From China)

Compare the substantial differences and make your choice.

It is probably worthwhile also looking at http://www.importingriches.com/Impor...tart-Guide.pdf (Here I am publicizing a product that in some ways competes with mine) When you look through this Quick Start Guide, take the trouble to check some of the statements made. For example, can you really resell the first item mentioned for $15 - $20? Or can you find it retail in the US at $4.99?

You might also like to investigate when Importing Riches was written. The copyright is 2011, but I think the book is older than that. For example: "Default Feedback" is quoted to show a seller on Aliexpress is good, but Aliexpress have not used default feedback for a long time.

Also, a major supplier website strongly recommended in Importing Riches is no longer functioning.

My book is revised every year.

        Hi @redalerta,

Yes it contains a lot of specific information on how to safely find genuine manufacturers and how to get them to supply small orders.

          Dear Walter,

I import toys in Europe from China. I am going to move to California on November. I want to import toys in Usa too, I want to sell online and give drop shipping service, but I do not know anything about USA customs rules. Is it easy importing Usa? and does your book explain how to import in Usa?

          thank you.

The rules for importing are universal, except for a few small local variations that generally won't concern you. This is why I have people in 35 countries using my book successfully.

Yes my book covers all you need to know about importing into the USA.

My aim was that selling toys online by using dropshipping sites. I searched dropshipping sites but thier price almost same on ebay price, I have changed my mind when I read your articles. I think it is good way to make money that importing products myself and sell them.

That is a very common story. Dropshipping cannot possibly give the margins that you can get by buying direct from the manufacturer in China.

You can order small quantities at amazingly low prices if you know how to approach the manufacturers.

Regarding first contact with potential suppliers, there are a few things you should and should not say:
                • Don't mention that you are new to the business.
                • Don't tell them you are a sole trader.
                • Don't offer your business plan like you would to a supplier in the USA.
                • Don't ask what is their MOQ. They will tell you soon enough. That is when you might start working on them to supply a lot less.
                • Don't offer your tax or business registration details.
                • Don't ask for samples early in your communications with them, and don't expect them to be free.
                • Don't haggle. Most "experts" will tell you to do so, but there are good reasons why you should not and I teach why you don't need to. This issue is even more critical in the early stages. If you try to talk the price down early on you will suddenly find no more emails arrive.
There are a few things you should say:
                • Tell them you are an established importer.
                • Tell them quality is important to you.
                • Ask them for a copy of their catalog, preferably a printed version.
                • Give them your business name. Don't have one? Invent one.
                • Give yourself a title such as Purchasing Manager.
