Selling Art Sculptures

Hi all,

I've created a ecommerce site for a local artist in my hometown, now he wants me to help market and sell his art online. I started getting a little following on Facebook for him but no sales, i can tell already tell that Facebook is not the right market because his art starts at around $300 and goes up to $10,000. Most people on FB are not looking to buy art that expensive.

Im working on SEO but that will be a long term approach.

I have a few ideas on how to market the art now, but i thought i'd make a post here and see what advice i can get from fellow warriors..

Here is some of his work. The art is mostly old western era/biblical as you can see:

Though I have to give a disclaimer that I'm far from an expert on selling art online, it seems to me that these sculptures could sell well if targeted at the right niche market, namely Christians, possibly people who are politically conservative. Are there any forums or groups you can advertise on?

Remember the TV commercial for what was his name.. Zamphir? the guy that played the Pan Flute? They worked him up so much they probably could have sold his CD for 10 easy payments of $29.95 and people would have bought it. Even today go look the guy up on Wikipedia "Gheorghe Zamfir" and he is also known as "The Pan Flute Master" - Some of the best something out of nothing marketing ever - IMO

I am going to assume based on some of the wording used in regards to your attempts at Facebook advertising you pretty much said "Hey, this guy has art come look at it and buy it" THAT.. is not selling... that is well, a waste of time.

Posting an image of the John Wayne piece as an example and writing a bit of marketing text and giving the price with a link, and targeting that particular post to groups and an audience that may find interest in such a piece with a link to a page that gives some background of the artist and about the piece may be a bit more fruitful.

Your job as a marketer at this point is selling the ARTIST first.. then his work. Warhol.. a great example.... drugged out of his mind and making silly screen prints of some iconic stuff... its NOT the art, its the ARTIST that sells!

@savidge4 I agree with your method and that's what i did. I created posts targeting an individual piece of art with some sales copy w/ a link back to the product. Then ran FB ads with keywords related to the product. The ads got good responses 100+ likes & great compliments about the art. However, no sales.

One thing i like about your response is to sell the artist before his work. I will try to focus on that more.

I haven't though about forum marketing, but it's worth researching.
