Bulk Listing & Inventory Management

I am starting a new business where we will be purchasing containers of wholesale returned products from major retailers. I am currently trying to figure out how to one, process the inventory into software, and two an easy way to list the items on sites such as amazon or ebay. I wouldn't have any trouble with this if it was a few hundred items, but we are talking about thousands if not tens of thousands.

I know there are many other small businesses that do this sort of thing, but since I am new to this space, I have no idea how they manage and process inventory of this magnitude. MY background is in accounting and finance.

Obviously we would purchase scanners and some software for inventory tracking, but I have heard that you have to purchase (or create) databases for your scanners. I assume a retailer such as Amazon would offer databases for purchase or at least another company would. Our first containers will be Amazon returns, so having their inventory database would be key.

So the main things I am trying to figure out are what things I need to purchase with respect to: inventory software, scanners, inventory databases, etc. Also, if there is anything else I should know or any other information I'm leaving out, I would appreciate the help!

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi TriCapital,

    Welcome to ecommerce!

With so many SKUs, I think an inventory software is essential to helping you stay on top of all moving stock. I work for an inventory software (ecomdash) that has listing capabilities built in so that you could edit/manage listings, no problem. We keep track of all moving inventory and automatically update quantities on your sales channels whenever a purchase is made.

If you want to shop around (I suggest you take a look at a few tools that seem beneficial to you), then check out ecommerce review sites like WebRetailer and Ecombytes. You'll find extensive software directories, and can see what your peers think about each tool.

When you narrow down to 2-3 tools that seem best for your business, run the free trials and ask lots of questions, like what's their up-time in the case of an outage (very rare, but good to know).

Not sure if you'd be interested, but we just published an eBook for ecommerce businesses looking to grow. There is a comprehensive section on how to find a good software for your business, and a checklist to follow. Also tips on marketing, social strategies, website changes, Amazon tips and more. If you'd just like to take a look at the software checklist, skip to chapter 5.

Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

    Tiana
