Hi Guys,

I have a background in Online/affiliate marketing/advertising, I have money (~$3K to $15K), I know how to operate a shopify website and how to drive traffic to it BUT I can't find a viable product to sell.

Do you guys have any idea of a product or better any idea how to find some good product to sell?

I am mostly interested in drop-shipping product and I am US based.

Thanks for your help.

D.

This question gets asked a lot and I will say if anyone knows of any good products they're not going to tell you because if they know any they're selling them already. What benefit would it be to them to tell you. You'll have to do your homework check Amazon and Ebay for starters to see what's the big sellers.Sorry not to be a smart Alec.Sure others will agree.

Of course the dropshipper will offer you advice, they want you to sell their product for them!

To get ideas, look around your house. Find something small, light-weight and easy to produce in mass quantity. I'd say NO to electronics or brand names as they are probably poor quality and actual knock offs.

A good example may be dog leashes. I'm sure it's an over-saturated market, but the product is 1) light 2) simple 3) small and 4) CHEAP.

Shipping is a lot more expensive than you think unless you're not importing.

It is a good thing that you have decided to put into practice your skills for your own good. Before you start an online shop, the first thing you need to do is a proper research so that you can find a niche where the service you want to offer has a lot of demand. You can do that within your neighborhood and trust me you will come up with a product that people find it hard shopping and thus you will invest in the area. Products are there just get the target audience and keep rolling.

If you have that much money to invest, why invest in the lowest profit business model? The low margins so often reported in posts on the forum mean that dropship resellers are just working as cheap labor for the dropshipping suppliers. There is a viable and highly profitable alternative - direct importing.

There are other things to take into account, such as the good feeling of knowing that you won't be left in the lurch by dropshippers running out of stock or discontinuing a product line without bothering to tell you. That is a very common complaint made by warriors who have become unhappy with dropshipping.

Also, don't forget that when you buy from a dropship supplier, that is a B2B transaction and you have no consumer protection. Your customers do, and if they return a lot of product, you have to find the money to finance those refunds, and still carry them in stock until you sell them - if ever. Demand may have gone off the boil due to sudden release of an updated version, or merely a fashion fad has changed, or you may have chosen purple but the color most people prefer is red. You will make the refunds but may not sell the returned items, without taking a heavy loss.

If such returns happen when you have imported direct from real manufacturers, you will be able to discount by 50% and still make a profit. That way you would not only liquidate your inventory, but also make a much bigger margin than the average dropshipper.

Your information is incorrect on returns. I don't know of a single legitimate supplier that doesn't accept returns on drop shipped items.

When using a dropship business model, when your customer returns a purchase, you can return it to the supplier for a refund. No biggie. Also you can charge customers a restocking fee to ensure that you can keep some of the profit.

Some suppliers even provide their return address on the packing slip for easy returns, even if drop shipping. Drop ship returns can be a hassle, but not in the way that you suggest.

I was referring to returns due to change of mind.

Even with 'change of mind' if the seller has a strong Returns Policy detailed on the website, there should be minimal returns. General example: Purchase must be returned within 10 days(or within your Suppliers limit) of receipt. Customer will pay for return shipping and will be charged a 20% restocking fee.

          Also:

If an item is found to be defective through no fault of the customer, refund or exchange will be granted without question and customer will not be charged for restocking fee or shipping fee.

    You're doing it backwards.

Look for buyer traffic, then look for a product to sell to that same traffic.

Now you know why fast food franchise's require a feasibility study on traffic volume before they'll allow a new restaurant to be built. No suitable traffic volume, no reason to build a restaurant. Same applies to any other business.
