So I was wondering, I've seen a lot of cheap stuff on amazon , ebay etc which I believe I can sell for much higher on my own website, but I have a feeling that all the people will go searching for the same product on ebay, and they'll just buy the product there because it's a little cheaper. Any tips?

You're probably right, at least initially. If you are just starting out in ecommerce you will probably have a lot of competition to deal with. I say 'probably' because I don't know what type of inventory you have.

If you know something about SEO than the path should be easier, but it could take a while to get a 1st page rank. Other alternatives are an Amazon store account, Bing product advertising and the Google Shopping feed. This method, of course, will cost and impact profitability.

Frankly, if you have the time, I would do both, at least initially. Develop your website and price your products as you see fit. Then add them to Ebay (you can set up a template on Turbo Lister to do this fairly quickly) and keep your prices competitive to the rest of the market there. The same would be true for the Amazon store route.

    Good luck.

That is what you are thinking and i tell you very few people do comparing the items they get online before making purchase. It is a good business opportunity if you took such like items and sell them at a price that is profitable. As long as you are not overcharging the items and products, i am sure that they will buy. Just make sure that the price is lower than what is always charged in their local shops and malls. people will have no excuse but to have them bought.

    Beware!

Ebay, your own site, and amazon are all ecommerce. However, they are as different as different can be. Many, many have made the mistake of thinking of ecommerce as a single business category. It is, but it isn't.

The biggest difference comes in the intention and mindset of the customers of those sites. Ebay customers are generally very different in thinking than amazon customers. Similarly website shoppers.

Ebay, cheap. Amazon, trust. Website, brand. Just a few descriptors to begin to get you thinking about this whole thing. It all impacts how your set up your ecommerce, the product portfolio you create, how you go-to-market on them, and a whole lot more.

    Good luck with your ventures.

I would advise you to find an e-commerce service provider. It is extremely competitive out there and the only thing to dispute after the price is quality. If your website provides this security to customers about quality, value for money, excellent customer service that is the way to beat Chinese e-commerce. Being in the country of the customer allows more flexibility on communication and more security. I could suggest a great company if you are interested, just let me know.

It really depends on a lot of factors, including what product you are selling and how you plan to market your own website (building traffic and sales takes time unless you have a hefty marketing budget at the outset). Some items that can have a high perceived value can do well at a higher price, others cannot.

@guy101 What kind of product are you selling?
Most people will associate Ebay with low quality and are willing to pay more if you are offering good quality products.

@pppp Maybe you can share or send a pm, thanks.
