I can't let you get you get away with that.

I"m sorry, no offence, but there is a danger that someone might actually believe you and waste time doing what your recommend. Clearly you've never run an ecommece business. If you had you would know that the last thing you would do is spend much time with social media to get direct sales.

To the original poster, the number one thing you should do is get really good at ads. Particularly facebook advertising and amazon ppc ads (if you're also selling on amazon). Also experiment with Google Adwords but for some ecommerce business owners this is only moderately successful. You are likely to get less success using Pinterest and Instagram ads due to the particular market you are in.

Back to social media, this is almost always not useful in the beginning to get direct sales. However it can be very useful in the med-long term to build your brand awareness, particularly in B2C.

      Good luck with your venture.

In short, I should say "Marketing for a site it is an long process and of course time consuming matter." To market an ecommerce site you should go through all kind of marketing process:

    # Use Social Media (FB, Twitter, Instagram, google+, pinterest)
    # Setup Email Marketing Campaign (aweber, mailchimp, constant contact)
    # Do white hat SEO (on page and off page)
    # Run Ads Campaigns
    # Don't forget to run an blog for your site

And I am sure you will find more and many more ideas online if you do a little bit a research.

Not knowing how to do the work is not an excuse to not succeed. Hire it out and let someone else handle the marketing. If you don't have the know how, not willing to learn how or able pay someone to do it, you have no one to blame but yourself on the lack of success. So make a decision of what you want to do with your business.

You asked how to make it happen, so make it happen.

Seems I'm a little late getting to the party, but since this thread was at the top of my list of unread posts, I'll give it a shot.

Well, there are some great suggestions above, but a lot of things depend on other factors around your business...

What is your product? (Batteries, in your case.)
      What is your budget? (???)
What is your skill level or experience? (Not much, in your case.)
      What - etc., etc., etc.

There are a lot of questions that dictate the answer to your original question.

Knowing just a few of those variables, and reading the answers from above, I would suggest you ALSO try to think creatively (in addition to what's already been mentioned by others above.)

Maybe you could write some guest posts on automotive related blogs. Maybe spend some time on websites or in forums that your potential customers spend time at and offer all of the free help and advice you can. Don't visit or join those websites or forums solely for the purpose of advertising your business (use a subtle link or two in your signature or profile page, of course, such as what you've done here) but rather try to genuinely help people and add value to the conversation and your advertising will take care of itself on those venues.

Maybe find out if there are any weekly or monthly newsletters that your potential customers might subscribe to or read online and contact the author/owner of those venues and ask about writing guest posts or at least ad space.

Write a short ebook or user's guide (20 pages ???) about batteries - history, types, best uses, etc. - and give it away for free around the web. Maybe start with a PDF version and later convert it to an ebook on Amazon and still give it away for free. You don't have to be an expert, nor do you have to write an encyclopedia - the point here is just to put some useful quality content out there that will provide people with some knowledge or benefit and all the while they are seeing no other advertising or marketing except for YOUR business name!

Use what others have mentioned above - for sure! But don't overlook the smaller, simpler, and cheaper ideas. And above all else... Think creatively!

I wish you the best of luck with your business adventures!

I'm going to suggest something radical for an online forum - don't worry about promoting your website.

Since you are looking to sell wholesale, driving traffic to your site is a moot point. What you want to do is to build awareness of your brand and offers to businesses likely to want to sell your products. so instead of wasting your time and money with trying to get people to your website, spend it by researching your market, finding those who need to sell what you offer, and go after them.

I'd hire a virtual assistant to help research your market both brick and mortar stores and online stores, then put together marketing materials aimed at their carrying your product. Give those people your website url so they can register to buy and see what you offer. Stress your product line, shipping times, if you dropship or not (important to online stores), bulk discounts, quality of products and service, etc. Create information they need to sell your products to consumers, but that is their job. Yours is getting them to carry your merchandise.

There is no reason to worry about how many people see your website, connect with you on social media, and the other things we B2C stores fuss about. Many of the 80+ wholeasalers (some huge, some small mom and pops) I deal with have awful websites IF they have a website at all - because they don't NEED anything fancy. They know their products are what is really important.

Running and promoting your ecommerce website can be an uphill battle.....but if you stick with it...it can be done and profitable.
    • Take some time, make sure your content - product listings, blog posts (I would recommend if you can add that feature) all have unique, well written content. This will make your job a little easier...as Google likes that.
    • Promote your website and/or products anywhere you can for free. This should be an ongoing thing you do! Grow your backlinks and increase your long term traffic.
    • Sell a little on marketplaces - do not offer all your products - just the ones that you can still make money with (because they keep roughly 10% of what you sell). Use your business/website name as your seller account name - this is advertising!!!! People will search for your website/business online if they like your products!
    • As you start to grow - start paying for some advertising! I suggest Google and Facebook ads. Only target unique keywords (not generic like 'computers' - as you will pay too much for results). Also - never pay more than 10% of your sales monthly for advertising. If you do this, you will grow slow.....but hopefully stay profitable!

Some great places to promote your sales:

For a business like your, to get it off it's feet, best to iniitally promote it locally.

Once you're getting somewhat consistent orders and branding becomes necessasry move on to social media.

It would be hard for me to purchase a car battery online if I didn't know the brand was reputable.

I have my own ecommerce store. My products are mostly Ladies and Men garments. I promoted my store locally first and I got pretty large sales. Then I promoted my store on facebook targeted campaigns within my area. Its really awesome. I would suggest to do the same with your products. You should have a physical store too.

There are many ways to promote the eCommerce website. Firstly you need to read about SEO. You need to work on both on-page & off-page SEO.
Checked your website's on page work. Searched keywords, add meta tag for product page and interlink your pages. When you're completed on-page work then you need to start work on the off-page activity.
In off page, there are many activities that you need to do.
Searched some local sites that relevant according to your site & submit your products here. Worked on social channel Like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest & Instagram. Promoted your product on these social sites, shared good images etc.
Work on classifieds sites, post ads with good images.
Participate on questions answer sites & forum sites.

From my experience, I've never had to promote my store.

The reason being is that I sell anything under the sun, therefore I have no real niche.

Ive been running an E-commerce store on Ebay for a good while now and I generate sales based on people searching for the particular items.

For anyone out there thats interested in E-commerce, just realise that you don't need to open a store and specialise in one area.

ecom is the real biz because they sell physicall product,, which means something you can touch n people n buying real goods.

I think you can use the way real businesses do their promotion, e.g email marketing, list new prospects & telling them about new promo, discount, free shipping, etc.

Paid traffic I think is the way to go. =)

Digital Marketing will be best. And one most important things is Focus on On-Site enhancement specially content on your category pages, products pages and other important pages by using potential keywords.
The greater information you have placed on webiste the more chances to come in higher rank. Content should be generic and informative. no Spamming, no duplicate.

A good question indeed.First of all you should decide what kind of demographic you plan to target. In my opinion your product will take time to get the likes of general public right away and it will be hard to achieve the desired sales target.I think your product has a potential among big wholesalers and auto garage shops. You can approach them in following ways.

1.Try cold calling: It works sometimes if you offer them some kind of incentive ( e.g if you buy 100 units you can pay $9/unit or 500 units with $8/unit).

2.Try email marketing for big retailers:You can find effective literature online on how to construct a perfect marketing email.Doing business with retailers is safe because they buy your product in high volumes which can have pretty nice margins for you.

    3. Find facebook pages where people interested in cars and bikes comment and share their views. You can find a perfect demographic of your product over there.Share a best image from your inventory within the comments or inbox the page administrator to advertise your product for some money.

    Cheers J

SEO is an integral part of creating a successful e-commerce site. However, your promotion strategy should be specifically designed to solve the problems on the site, where the central role - is a consistent stream of customers making purchases online constants. Many SEO strategies for e-commerce is, of course, just like the same strategies used in other types of sites. However, you have to think and act a bit differently to get the desired result.

    Keywords
Keywords are directly related to SEO. When a person searches on the Internet, it uses a fairly specific keywords, to find what he is looking for. So it's important to know in order to understand which one it uses and which ones are the most profitable. However, after the recent changes on Analytics, it has become a kind of calling. If you use keywords properly - the exact entry, keyword stuffing and so on - they can actually do more harm than good.

The site dedicated to e-commerce, there are more things to consider. For example, it may seem a good idea to use general keywords that get a high search volume, but if you link these general terms for a particular page, you probably do not provide the level of information on the page you want to see the visitor on the case.

Instead, you should consider branded keywords and long tail keywords. This is the first step to go to the core of the issue and attract users who are interested in the products on a particular page. Furthermore, it is necessary to avoid using the same key word for different pages. This seems obvious, but this error allow many e-commerce sites. This can be a costly mistake for a site where several products are on separate pages. For product offerings change over time and the site should be developed to keep up with these changes. You do not want a potential client trying to find something specific, proved in the end to the old page, which no longer contains what he was looking for? This will make your site unprofessional and inappropriate. At that point, your potential customer is likely to stay with a bad impression about your online store.

    Unique content
Another universal strategy SEO is a unique content. The search engines will rank your page higher if it contains a unique, valuable content, which effectively concerns of customers. This principle rings true for any site. However, the text content for an online store should be somewhat different.

Many e-commerce sites are content with a simple description of product placement and the manufacturer of the product. Of course, you can only rely on the content, but it's the same content using any other e-commerce site that sells the same product.

When you sell a product online, its description plays a huge role. It may seem that simply copy and paste the product description on your page, but it's the last thing you should do. Search engines understand that this is just a description of the products and it is not necessary to punish you for them, but they also will not give you any bonus for him. So why take the risk? For now, if you have the same description in a few pages on your own site, it could fall into the class of duplicate content and this will cause the imposition of penalties by the search engines.

Product description is still considered the content of the page, and it still has to be unique. Of course, if you have thousands of products for sale on your site, build your own description can be a little difficult for each of them. If so, you can use repetitive text by adding a Meta tag to the page NOINDEX.

    Link
Search Optimization Online and convenient for the customers, the URL addresses are a very important part of promoting an online store. Many potential customers may begin to fluctuate with the click on a link that has a suspicious URL. Site address cannot look suspicious for everyone, but the average user will not know that there actually is for this very page. That is why the "human-readable URL-addresses" so important for e-commerce sites.

Enter keywords in the URL has no effect on Google as before, but it still helps in the long run. In addition, there is always the chance that another site will do just repost or copy material from this link. If they use a URL as a link instead of embedding it in Encore, you'll still be able to reassure customers about the destination address when you click on the link.

    Using SEO to your advantage
SEO Strategies come in all shapes and sizes for any kind of site, but most of them are universal. You can apply these universal strategy for your e-commerce site, but it will be necessary to adapt them to specific types of customers with whom you are dealing. Proper use of SEO on your website will attract more traffic, but its effective use will create the desired conversion.

You can either promte your store using free advertising methods and paid methods. Paid advertising requires money but brings in more targeted traffic faster if you know what your doing. I would recommend you start with free advertising methods just to see how well your store converts before considering investing money for advertising. Do your research on the best free advertising and if your product is good enough, you should make a sale.

9 steps to promote your ecommerce website

    Step 1
Apply Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to your e-commerce website. This technique makes it easier for search engines, such as Google and Bing, to find your website. Sprinkle relevant keywords throughout your website to attract search engines. For example, if you sell second-hand clothing, use keywords and phrases like "online thrift store" and "buy used clothes." Don't overuse Flash or Javascript. Search engines have difficulty "seeing" this type of content.
    Step 2
Start and maintain a blog that relates to your e-commerce website. For instance, if you sell DVDs on your website, write articles about new movie releases on your blog. Link the blog and the e-commerce website together. If a reader likes your blog, he may visit your website.
    Step 3
Find forums related to your e-commerce website. Use your website's URL as your forum signature, if allowed to do so. Participate regularly in forum discussions. Get to know other posters and tell them about your website.
    Step 4
Add your website to Google Places and other directories if your business has a physical location. Google Places works best if you're trying to attract local customers.
    Step 5
Look for other websites related to your e-commerce site. Ask the site owner if they would like to link to your website. If they agree, return the favor by putting a link to their site on yours.
    Step 6
Use the power of social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook, to share your e-commerce website with others. Make a Facebook page dedicated to your e-commerce site and encourage customers to become your fans. Use Twitter to tweet about your sales, special offers and news related to your site.
    Step 7
Create business cards and pamphlets with your e-commerce URL printed on them. Hand them out whenever appropriate.
    Step 8
Ask existing customers to tell their friends about your website. In exchange, offer a discount on a future purchase.
    Step 9
Buy Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads. These targeted ads appear in search results. If someone clicks on the ads, they visit your site and you pay a fee. This type of advertising is quite effective, but often expensive.
