Hey everybody, I just joined warrior forum today!

My goal is to start an eCommerce business this year once I save up some funds (I had some unfortunate events happen, I'm completely broke right now). In the meantime I thought I would join the community, get to know some people, and learn as much as I can before actually starting.

I do have a product in mind, and I think I'll start selling on a website like ebay or amazon until I can afford to make a website and build a good customer base.

This is mainly just an introduction thread, but I do have one question I would like to ask right now. Is it a good idea to build a website on something like wordpress before creating a custom website, or would people think it's cheap and tacky? Like I said, I'd be selling on a different website as well, but I would like to get a head start on advertising my website before I actually build a custom one.

    Hi and Welcome!

Personally, I think it greatly depends on the product that you are going to sell, because selling clothing, for example, is very different from selling an e-book.

Wordpress is definitely a good option for e-commerce websites seeing as both WordPress itself and woocommerce are free, however if you want your site to look nice I would definitely recommend buying a premium WordPress theme which usually costs somewhere between $30-$60. You could also look into solutions like Shopify, there you will have to pay a monthly fee, but everything you need will be included.

You have to decide for yourself what suits your purpose best and whether hosting your own site, using Shopify or selling on eBay or amazing is the best option.

    Hope it helps!

You can create great looking eCommerce sites using Wordpress for a small amount of money. Woocommerce is free, and there are a few nice looking themes out there that are pretty much plug and play. As mentioned above though, it depends on what you want to sell

Some of the largest and best ecommerce sites are built on WooCommerce, so no it is not considered cheap and tacky and Wordpress and the WooCommerce extension are both free. You can always get a designer to create a custom theme later if you want to spend the money, but there are so many great WooCommerce themes available, even that is not necessary.

    Hi,

The only thing tacky about using Wordpress is the result form lack of skill. You can do some pretty amazing things with it, really. As it was suggested previously, there are thousands of amazing templates you can buy that will save you the time and energy of coding with a free template. There are some pretty nice free templates too. Helps if you can code a bit - mostly in HTML and CSS, but it really doesn't require a level of expertise.

Thanks for all the reply's. I had never heard of woocommerce before, I'll definitely check it out.

Edit: I see it has to do with wordpress.

WooCommerce is a free plugin by woothemes.com that turns your Wordpress blog into an ecommerce store, combined with a WooCommerce theme (and they have some free ones of those also). There are a lot of commercial extensions available to do anything you want or need to do with the store.

    .

Keep in mind that the site you build yourself will never have anywhere near the amount of buyer traffic that Amazon has.

Along with using your site you should consider using Amazon's FBA business model. That will most likely provide the vast majority of your sales.
