Selling directly on Amazon

I think to make serious money online one needs to sell stuff. Adsense will earn you a nice passive income each month but unless you have wildly popular sites, most not really going to bring in liveable income.

Successful affiliates can make serious money but these guys generally are well established and are good at marketing using email.

All things considered, I am favouring the idea of selling on Amazon utilising either Amazon's FBA or a dropship model. I have been wanting to learn as much as much as I can about selling on Amazon and there are some decent sites teaching the basics.

From my experience, however, of reading content about successful selling on Amazon is that they provide good info until when it comes to the vital part, which is the sourcing of products. Invariably, they will point you in the direction of importing from China. But do you know how much headache that causes? Products are either generally second rate or the cost of import too excessive, leaving margin wafer thin. More work than it's worth.

So what is the point of your thread ? Have you ever looked for products on clearance and tried selling them ? Why did you post this in the main forum instead of the e-commerce section, where there is a lot of information about Amazon Fulfillment ? Not all stuff from China is cheap junk. You can import from other countries besides China, the world is a very big place.

I made this point. I said the products are either second rate (generally non-branded, cheap quality) or they are of standard quality but tend to be too costly to import.

What about wholesalers? Buying whatever product is in high demand in bulk (big quantities) and then re-selling individually for a higher price?

It's either that or importing from other countries, not necessarily China. There's no other magic way of selling on Amazon, because essentially you're competing on price.

I am also not sure of the point you are making. I do agree that the FBA business model is excellent and of course proper sourcing is the key to building a profitable inventory.

You are right that you want to avoid poor quality products as that will result in returns and bad feedback, both things you want to avoid.

    ???

Then I must be living in some sort of parallel amazon universe. I'm selling 6 figures a month with an average profit margin of 54%. My products are sourced from China (mainly) and are neither second rate or thin on margin. Private labelling, smart marketing and professional business management are a few of the keys.

And, it's not just me. I've coached well over a hundred new ASMers through exactly this business model ever since the release of ASM3 and many of them are now doing exactly the same.

In short, i'm puzzled at your comment. Good luck with your venture.

Let me give you one example of what I mean. One of the major dropship Chinese sites is Chinavision. All the products they have there is very difficult to sell after mark up. I have seen some Chinavision products on Amazon and the markup isn't great. If I mark them up higher than rival sellers then I am unlikely to get sales. The shipping rates are also quite expensive. Not to mention, I have read of incidents where the items are faulty and it then becomes prohibitively expensive to get another one sent out to he customer. This is where negative feedback from the customer will hurt your Amazon business.

No one is forcing you to use those Suppliers. There are literally hundreds of thousands to choose from around the world. Or source in the USA which I agree is higher quality, but you will pay higher prices.

Yes, I understood you first time around. I don't think you understood my response.

In short, it is your business model, allied with your supply, that is causing you the problem. I use a completely different business model that is focused on private labelling (along with other things) which gives me the very different result of a 6 figure sales per month with over 50% margin.

You're focusing on tactics when you should first evaluate the different business models and their potential for both volume of sales and margin.

        Good luck with your venture.

Why would you use a dropship company with low margins and then put them in fba? If you want to go that route merchant fulfill or find a better supplier. Just because it comes from China doesn't mean you are getting the best price.

If I find a dropshipper then obviously I won't be using FBA in that particular instance.

I wouldn't go the Amazing Selling Machine(aka private labeling ) route. What they won't tell you is there is so much risk involved when you private label. Cost will most likely be in the $1,000 + . It seems like you are new.

Most people start out doing RA(retail arbitrage) and then work up to online arbitrage, wholesale, liquidations, private labeling etc.. I started selling refurbished computers(tablets, desktops, laptops) back in 2013. I have move on into wholesale and liquidation.

I think RA is your best bet to start out or what ever you have a niche in(sports, technology, gaming etc..) Then start googling and find the manufacturers - send them emails - get ready to then go to the 2 distributors that sell that product. You will to have a LLC or Corporation to sign up with the distributors. Plus its more professional. Then Start going around to local business's and promote yourself. There so much you can do !!!

When I started importing in 1987, I did so because:
      • I got better quality.
      • I got better prices with margins never below landed cost X 250%.
      • I got faster service.
You have been looking in the wrong places.

My business did so well that I franchised it and by the time I retired a few years ago I had a franchise network in 4 countries.

I can't imagine why anyone would even consider dropshipping from China when you can buy small quantities direct from manufacturers in China and other countries and make huge margins.

How do you source manufacturer without visiting the country? Of course I would love to be able to source directly from manufacturers in China or wherever else as that would leave comfortable margins to work with.

I apologise about not merging the three responses into a single post.

The question was dealt with briefly in this thread: Sourcing Genuine Manufactuers Online It has only 4 posts.

I would be pleased to answer any questions. I have done so for many warriors on my thread: Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here. and it might help you to have a look through that.

I have taught hundreds how to safely source and import from China, and very few of them have ever been there.

Use drop shipping that is advertise and only purchase when it is sold and get it shipped to your customer thats the best way That is if you do not want to purchase stock and sell. Send it into amazon and they will do everything for you at a cost.
