Amazon Product Selection

Hi Everyone,

I am new to WF and new also to the world of making money online, through eCommerce and more specifically on Amzon FBA.

I came across the idea of starting a white label business on Amazon about two months ago. Being quite excited, I started researching the subject. I came across many courses, books, podcasts and videos.

Although I didn't take any of the vast number of courses available such as the Amazing Selling Machine by Ryan Moran because I didn't think I needed it. I believed that I could get the same information on the net for free without having to spend $4,000. I still believe that. The only course I would pay for is one in which I could get one to one coaching from somebody proven to be making substantial income on Amazon. To my knowledge there is no such course.

However, through joining many FBA Sellers groups, reading two books on the subjects and listening to podcasts such as the amazing seller by Scot Volker I have gained a lot of knowledge and a set of rules for finding my first product on Amazon.

I have been searching the Amazon Market Place using the following criteria:

1 - Price Range between £20 - £40 (Impulsive Buying Range)
2 - BSR 100 - 3000 (I would go as low as 5000 BSR depending on the Category )
3- Market Depth - Am I able to launch multiple products within the same category and make bundles etc.
4- Margins - ideally 50% profit margin potential once the product gains organic sales. Although I don't expect that to start off with as I would like to establish the product first.
5- Weight - ideally less than 400g but I have been flexible on this one. I have researched products weighing up to 3kgs. I have worked out that higher weight items are cheaper delivered through FBA.
6- Avoid Super Competitive & Brand Dominated Categories - Namely, Electronics, Beauty, Health & Personal Care for my first product.

There some additional rules but the above are the main ones which I used for product selection.

I have been searching deep in Amazon for a product with reasonably moderate competition and generous demand. A product which doesn't have too many sellers or reviews. Basically a product on which I could eventually get to at least 10 sales a day organically and without PPC with around about 50% Profit Margins and then roll out the multiple products under the same brand and in the same market.

I came across a product in the Pet Supplies which after research I was convinced was going to be my first product. However, whilst looking at the number of sellers I noticed that there was no depth in the market. Out of the 'top ten' sellers only three were shifting between 5-10 units each and the rest were selling one or two every other day. I figured that in order to make money I would have to be among the top three already established products. Frustrating as it was after hours of work I put into it I dropped the product. Is there anybody here selling in the Pet Supplies catagory? It seems to me to be one of the quietest catagories on Amazon as they only introduced it in 2010. Am I wrong?

I have spent hours studying all aspects of white labelling, outsourcing, importing along with product search. I have a full time job and am currently restricted with time but I really want to kick start this venture and get my first product on Amzon as soon as possible but I just can't seem to find a product based on the set of rules I have mentioned above. I would really appreciate it if you are able to share your experiences with me. I don't expect you to tell me which products you sell. I would greatly appreciate some advice, am I missing something? Am I being to rigid with my product selection?

I would love to hear how you rolled your first product on Amazon and how it's done for you since then.

Please help! It'll be most appreciated!!

Seems like you have done a lot of research on choosing products on Amazon. I would suggest you to use Any Amazon Market research tool like Eglim to track reviews for the products you are going to sell on Amazon in case you are going to outsource these products from China or some other country. By tracking reviews you will be able to estimate sales on any particular product over a period of time. This will help you in finding great products to sell on Amazon.

One suggestion would be to simply start your Amazon business sooner rather then later. The sooner you start the sooner you will learn some of the ins and outs of using the Amazon seller dashboard and learning about the business model. IMO starting FBA by private labeling seems to make the getting started part rather difficult as there are a lot of steps to go thru. Starting small and simply may be a good idea for some folks.

It sounds like you are searching for the one perfect product to market. There probably is no perfect product but lots of good and profitable products. Just my thoughts....
