Quick question. If I had an Ecommerce website, and I sold on both the website and amazon/ebay, can I or would it be a good idea to do Dropshipping, private label, and Importing? Do people normally do that or do they stick with 1 thing like dropshipping etc.

Nothing to stop you experimenting with all business models.

However it would get complicated and I wouldn't recommend it. What I would recommend is first understanding the business model and economic structure of each as they deliver very different results (eg dropshipping is heavily structured to favour the supplier at the expense of the dropshipper).

For me I chose private labelling with my own brand some time ago because this normally has much larger margins and gives much greater control over the whole process.

    Good luck with your venture.

I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Private Label thing. I'm not very knowledgeable on it, I know the idea of it, but I need to look into it more that's for sure.

There are now thousands of people making excellent money by private labeling.

I have taught thousands of people how to safely source small or large quantities overseas and import them the easy way. I don't teach marketing, but can recommend where to get help on that side of things if needed.

Many of them have chosen to private label, and are enjoying high profit margins. Some have posted here on the forum about working on markups of 300% to 500% on landed cost.

Safe sourcing and easy importing is a lot easier than many people think. Because there are so many myths and there is so much misinformation published on forums and blogs and in importing courses, I started my AMA. Good advice. Dropshipping sounds fantastic and is as close to zero inventory as you can get but in reality, it's very difficult. I think where dropshipping works best is in wholesale where you don't have a 'consumer' expecting all of the touchpoints they want.

Start with drop shipping ..arbitrage is perfect because the risk is low and you can learn..once you make that happen ( and you can no matter what the naysayers whine to the contrary ) you can add other things ....don't spread yourself too thin getting started or it will be frustrating

You can do it... just walk before you run :-)

It really depends on your end goal? Do you want to eventually build your own brand or are you just after something to bring in the funds?

All have their pros and cons. We do a lot of private label manufacturing and whilst you can get away with manufacturing smaller quantities dependent on the product, the actual upfront cost can easily be in the thousands if not tens of thousands of $$$. The margins are better and you have much more control but be prepared to hold onto stock and manage inventory.

Dropshipping is great if your starting out, it allows you to test the market before moving into your own private label brand. When you say importing do you mean your own products or other suppliers and holding onto stock? If so again, the cost upfront will be much larger just like private labeling.

Some private label manufacturers also dropship for you. So instead of you holding onto the stock they send out your own brand. Again each has its pros and cons. If i was a newbie and not sure of my market i'd first start out by testing a dropship model until i found a product that worked.

    Good luck!

Readers shouldn't be put off by what you say about the cost of starting off either in getting a manufacturer to make a product specifically for you or private labeling, or importing generics.

Many of those that I have taught have started of with less than $1,000, and quite a few with as little as $300.

Upfront costs such as the "thousands if not tens of thousands of $$$" you mention would very often not be required. Sometimes products with your own private label can be ordered in small quantities, with set up costs as low as $50. It depends on what product you are buying and selling.

The most important step is market research and it is the first item in my list of steps to take. You will find that list in my thread: If your secret B2B portals are so safe why don't you share?

Its great to have multiple streams of income however I can say from my experience that your going to need to focus down on one thing in particular and nail it before moving onto something else.

I Dropship on ebay and thats all.

At the end of the day its all income. Just don't get shiny object syndrome, is what Id say.

It can be time consuming to start with, but what I've found is that now that I've learnt everything, its just a case of rinsing and repeating.

Ive also hired Va's who do a lot of the work for me, as well as automated systems I've got in place.

Look at the profit margins posted by dropship resellers on WF, (not at those posted by people selling dropshipping courses.). You will see that the margins are so low that you are just working as cheap labour for the dropship wholesalers. They are the ones who make the real money.

I have taught hundreds how to start sustainable high profit businesses by importing small quantities of high profit margin products from genuine manufacturers.

Here's an example from one of them: "Ok. From extremely skeptical to successful completion. Credit given where credit is due. I followed the book instructions you laid out. Took my time to double check everything and was able to successfully import an order from China. Not only that but it was also a "sample order" for less than 300.00. A 300% mark up has allowed to get initial investment back and I have 70% of my inventory left. Stop promoting your book. Your encouraging competition for me Many thanks."
