Hi,

I was wondering if anyone on this forum has worked with Modern Sourcing Co. located in Vietnam. They are a sourcing company for furniture and wood products. They have not done anything to make me doubt their legitimacy. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
-Dedication

I have no direct knowledge of them, so I looked up their website and my Google search showed This site may harm your computer.

I know they used to advertise on one B2B site, but they are no longer there. This might be a warning sign, but it might not. The company might be completely reputable.

As a general rule, I advise against using sourcing agents unless you have been able to thoroughly check them out. Are they really working in your interest only? It is very common for sourcing agents to get secret commissions from suppliers.

I have even known case in which the agent buys from a very low cost supplier, adds a good profit margin and then sells to you under one of their own business names that they have not told you about.

I suggest taking great care before choosing a sourcing agent.

When you buy and sell stuff like furniture and work products over sea the best way to find more about the company you will be dealing with is to go there and see for yourself. That way, you will be sure that the plant is working great or has some problems, because if the wood is not dry enough it can be very bad when the products arrive in your warehouse. You can face furniture with mold or not dry enough and cracked furniture. Also, furniture and wood products are not so cheap, so if you want to sell their products you will be sending them a great sum of money and you will be receiving containers of items. So, what if you pay the company and the things you have ordered never arrive, so you have to be sure that the company will not trick you and you need to find a good shipping company so you can be sure you will get your products safe and sound. So my advice will be invest some money in a business trip, go there and find out every single thing, so in the future you will not be unpleasantly surprised.

This is good advcie for product sourcing generally. The only problem is that the majority of new importers don't have the money to invest in travel to see the manufacturers.

If they do have sufficient funds to travel to look for overseas suppliers, they need to do a lot of preparation before they go. This involves:

      • Search trustworthy B2B sites and find suppliers that have the products you want.
      • Investigate to sort out which ones are genuine manufacturers. This is very hard to do if you are using big B2B sites such as Alibaba.
      • Communicate with them, asking about their product and being sure to ask if you can visit their factory.
      • Get quotes and calculate all your costs to be sure it will be profitable to buy from them.
      • Buy samples and check them out thoroughly.
      • Sort out which ones you want to visit.
      • Plan your trip, allowing up to 2 -3 hours for each factory visit.
      • Learn the tricks that traders use when they take you to a factory pretending that they are the owners.
      • Learn how to negotiate with the ones that really are manufacturers.
      • Learn what kind of quotes to accept, and what the various shipping terms mean.
      • Learn how to handle the importing process.
Once you have done these things you are probably ready to make the trip. Don't waste your money and go without careful preparation. I have visited China countless times, first as an exporter 1078 -1987, then as an importer since 1987.
