I am currently using Ipayment inc with authorize net as my gateway. I'm wondering if anyone on here has a more cost effective suggestion for a merchant account provider. I already have paypal too.

Please let me know, it seems they all have negative reviews online.

Thank you.

  • I prefer to use stripe.com. It is like paypal. For digital products you may go with snappycheckout.com.

If you're not in the high-risk category (google "high risk payment gateway" if you are), then stripe.com is the #1 choice. However, there's also 2checkout.com (they've made some great improvements lately), and braintreepayments.com (now owned by PayPal). These three are token-based, which is what you want because then you don't have the PCI headache if you use their token-based API. That means, you don't store the credit card info for your customers. Instead, on the page, you exchange the credit card info for a token, and then store the token on your server, instead -- thus, the PCI headache is handled by the payment gateway, not you. However, I do recommend encrypting what's called PII in your database -- Personally Identifiable Information, such as telephone nums, street addresses, and email addresses. I usually leave city, state, zip, country, and name unencrypted, however -- it helps when I'm debugging.

Stripe is great, so is Paypal. Even Braintree is good too.

We use Stripe and PayPal, seems to be enough to offer everyone a quick and easy payment experience which is important.

The easiest way to go about this would be to get a prior statement and approach merchant accoutn providers for a comparison. It might take a week or two, but this is the best way to find reduced rates and it's a good investment for someone processing higher volumes of credit cards, it might save you a few 000 per month, so why not!

    One consideration:
Aggregators (Paypal, Square, Stripe etc) vs. Merchant account providers (Helcim (my employer), Payfirma, Moneris, TD, ETC)...

Aggregators have one merchant account to cover every business that signs up... This is turn makes the application instant, yet typically costs more in the long run due to the lack of chargeback assistance, higher transaction fees, and reactive approach to fraud. (Best for entreprenuers and first time startups, their POS interfaces/software are quite convenient usually.

Merchant account providers give a merchant account to each business. They act proactively, defend you through chargebacks and typically have reduced rates in comparison to aggregators..

We use Durango for several reasons, the primary one being that you can set up all websites on one account and not have to pay monthly fees for each site. Their customer service also blows away every other company we have tried. They use the NMI payment gateway, which is an Authorize.Net simulator.
