I have recently started to get into dropshipping. I have identified wholesalers and started listing those items on Amazon. I find it difficult to actually find items I can sell for less than other competitors on Amazon. Does anyone have any advice to help get started in dropshipping and selling on Amazon. ANy pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If you aren't able to compete, you are not getting true wholesale prices and probably did what everyone else does - you signed up for some lame dropship directory like DOBA or WorldWideBrands. You'll never be able to compete going through a middle man service like that

You need to start at the top - with the actual manufacturers and work your way down.

Think twice before you move into dropshipping (would be my reply).

To answer your question directly, although there are a handful of people who make a success at dropshipping, many don't. This is because the structure of the business model is weighted against the dropshipper in favour the supplier, and leaves the dropshipper heavily reliant upon others, outside their control, in the overall business process.

As a result, for many, their margins are small (therefore requiring large volume of sales) and risky.

Don't get me wrong, ecommerce is a fantastic opportunity (I myself have a 6 figure monthly ecommerce business with margins 40%+) but be careful with dropshipping as it's often the least advantageous of all the ecommerce business models.

Whatever ecommerce business model you choose, good luck with your ventures.

Wow, that was a whole lot of words that said absolutely nothing. The problem here is exactly what I said it was. He is using Salehoo - a third party dropship directory. Do it wrong and you're right - things are weighted heavily against you because you are not getting true wholesale pricing.

How many successful websites make up a "handful", by the way? We have built more than 100 profitable eCommerce sites, sold countless ones for 6 figures and currently own more than 60 that are all producing profits. We have coached many others that have been successful, as well. It comes down to the supplier. Get the real supplier or fail with third party dropship companies like Salehoo.

Lazy people take the easy way out which is why they always fail at whatever they try. Unfortunately, the 80/20 rule applies here just like it does everywhere else. Only 20% of people who try dropshipping go the extra mile. The other 80% do as little work as possible and then spend 80% of their time on forums talking about how it doesn't work.

OK so you are familiar with Salehoo? and you're saying their no good? Would you be interested in mentoring me just to get me started.Maybe helping me find some actual suppliers that will dropship for me if I list on Amazon, or do you think I should start a Shopify account?

What do you expect? That you can dropship (no risks and absolutely easy) and STILL have the best prices to offer? Of course people who source the REAL wholesalers/manufacturers outperform you in this field. These people are, in turn, outperformed by the companies buying the stuff in bulk.

Don't expect to go to AliExpress, visit the hot sellers and make instant profits. There are tons of competitors waiting for you and depending on the category there are insane price wars. Either find a very specific niche to enter or try to establish a brand around a certain topic which may eventually enable you to charge higher prices. Or be BETTER than your competition (product presentation, service, delivery, marketing, whatever).

And listen to dave regarding the real sourcing (directories are useless, at least in terms of price).

    Good luck!

  • I would suggest you to start your own ecommerce website. You can use Magento and build up a dropshipping website instead of listing on other's website.

Hi there. From personal experience I would say that if you are just starting out you would have a much higher chance of succeeding in the dropshipping business if you were to find very very niche suppliers, the type that are listed on page 100 of Google and which are therefore unlikely to have become popular yet. If the dropship supplier is also selling to dozens of other online merchants then the likelihood is higher that amongst those guys you will have merchants who are working with extremely low margins, and which can afford to sell their products much cheaper than you ever will be, simply because they are selling very high volumes of goods. I remember coming across a supplier of high quality prestige chessboards (the likes which are selling for several thousand dollars/pounds a piece) who offered dropshipping services to a limited number of customers. If you can find yourself even one or two suppliers like those, and get sweet with them, then you could be onto something.

Dropshipping is no doubt a great way to building a profitable business. If you are in need of making money without having to invest a lot, dropshipping is your way to go. Dropshipping is a challenging task for sure. However, certain softwares like eBay Amazon dropshipping software can make the job a lot easier for you. Good Luck
