Are there any good ecommerce niche research tools?

I was wondering if anyone could suggest some ecommerce research tools to see how competitive a certain niche is. For example, say I wanted to start an ecommerce store and thought selling kids' watches could be a profitable niche. Is there a tool I can use to search how competitive this particular niche is? Ideally I'd be looking for something where I could find other websites selling this particular product and see if I could sell this product or do a better job than the competition.

I know I could partially do this searching Google, but also a tool to recommend or show potentially profitable niches would be helpful as well.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks!

We have a tool that does exactly that but only Pro Members of our course have full access to the competitive metrics of the tool. The version that free members of Store Coach can use just gives you searches and related phrases - Niche Finder Pro

Interesting tool you have there Dave. May I ask, how do you obtain the search data used in your tool? Do you source the data from a provider or run your own web crawlers? Also how accurate is your data?

The search numbers are obtained from Google for each individual term but ARE NOT updated in real time. We grab the numbers several times per year but those numbers do not tend to change dramatically for the majority of product terms.

The "scores" for our CanIRank component are done in real time, where several on-page and off-page factors are evaluated for the top 10 websites ranking for each individual term and our scoring algorithm is applied. This is why you have to wait ten seconds or so for that score to be calculated for each term that you want the score for. Those are done in real time because the pages and backlinks for the top ten search results for any given phrase can change fairly rapidly for any given search term.

The number of google ads in a search gives you a basic idea of competition. COmpetition is fairly easy to analyse.

Profitablity is much more difficult to discover as the number of factors involved are huge.

You can use similarweb webpage and other pages to identify competitors in that niche see what they are doing right and wrong.
If you go though them and study them you might find good opportunities and then you might even have ideas how to improve upon them.
other way us just look at google shopping and ads our facebook of competitiors.
I think the key is identify your competition and try to be better in some way other than just price.
