If you wanted to sell an item of clothing for example, shorts, how do you go about judging the competition of your niche on google? For example, if you type shorts into google there are dozens of big stores, asos, river island, tesco, asda etc that show up in the rankings first, but none of these big sellers are specifically selling shorts they just have shorts in their ranges, so do you ignore them? or assume that the niche is too saturated? It feels like if you wanted to go into selling a specific niche of clothing like tshirts, hoodies, shorts etc you would never be able to stand out and rank highly on google because stores just stock too many items now, theres competition for every item of clothing imaginable. So how do you judge potential for a niche that happens to be on the product ranges of other big stores?? Thanks, hope this made sense

You either use a tool that shows how competitive any given KW phrase is or you learn how to analyze SERP result pages manually.

I don't need a tool to tell me that anything related to generic clothing terms is going to be next to impossible to rank for. You need to find a specialty niche within the clothing niche to stand any chance of competing - something like leather, leopard print biker jackets.

That, or you bag the concept of ranking well and turn your efforts toward social marketing and advertising (even then, it is better to have a specialty niche).

You niche down as far as you can go.

Let's say you have shorts for the beach.

You niche down into; Mid length drawstring beach and board shorts
    Or something similar.

Focus on getting as granular with your niche as possible, right down toe the nitty gritty. As in example you could add things like Tie Dye, Blue, Black, Cotton, 100% cotton or anything else that would describe your product.

You'll end up with a loooong tail keyword that will get all sorts of combinations of that keyword searched for.

    I hope that makes sense.

Don't fear the big broad niched stores. They are easy to beat.
