About Amazon fba is this risky as well? Or researching a product that sells for a month is usually enough to find a winner and become successful. Or is there a big risk that you remain in stock with a lot of useless inventory?

There will always be a risk of getting stuck with inventory at some point down the road. Walter Hay (a.k.a. ImportExport) is probably the best person to ask here on the forum about that.

There are a few factors to consider if you don't want to get stuck with inventory you can't sell, and you need to get started on a small budget.

Choose a unique product and private label it. That can be done with small quantities, but it requires you to think outside the square. Most people will tell you to look for hot selling items, but that usually ends up in competing on price.

I have taught many people how to find products that have never been imported into the USA. If you have your own brand and others don't know where to source such a product you avoid the race to the bottom that results from selling "me too" products.

Buy your product direct from the real manufacturer, and make sure you have bought it at the best possible price. Lots of people buy at what they think is wholesale, but they don't know how low costs can really be when they buy direct.

Open your mind to the idea of buying somewhere other than China. There are many countries where you can find keen producers looking for business. Most people buy from China because that's the easy path where everything is listed for you on sites like Alibaba. It is not so easy to source from countries outside China, but I have taught many people how to do it.

Readers might find it helpful to see my old, but still relevant thread: Importers should consider countries other than China where I answer a lot of questions.

This depends in the client requirement if your inventory is useless get rid of it or just focus on optimising.

I consider Amazon FBA risky and I would not recommend someone to start with this business model.

The reason is simple ; I don't care what Gurus in that niche are saying; it takes about $1000 to test a product. When they say you can get started with only $500 of inventory, they are not telling you that you will have to RANK your product on the Amazon search engines. You will have to pay for this also.

It costs around $1000 to have our products and rank well on Amazon.

ALSO, even if you ship by plane instead of by boat (will be more expensive), you have to wait around 2-3 weeks before you can start selling your products...

So just to recap, for each products you want to test, you will have to spend $1000 and wait at least 3 weeks to see if it works or not.

This is why I prefer drop shipping. It costs me about $20 to test a product and it takes me like 2 days on average to see if the product works.

$20 and two days vs $1000 and 3 weeks...

Oh, and my margins are better than when I used to sell on Amazon FBA...

Very good question! There are few risks in Amazon FBA business just like every other business in our daily life.

Finding and sourcing a product is one the biggest pains in FBA selling. You always want to find the product that will sell quickly rather than sitting in the warehouse and increasing overheads. So, I may suggest you to use any Amazon research tool to find the best product instead of just making wild guesses and sourcing a useless product.

Another thing to keep in mind after finalizing the product is to find the right supplier. To avoid being scammed you must consider below points:

    1. Differentiate between a trader and manufacturer to find the right supplier.
    2. Negotiate with your supplier, keeping in mind there are more things to negotiate besides the price of the product such as quality, payment terms, delivery time, etc.
    3. Keep a check on the quality of products. You can protect yourself from a varying number of problems by making a written agreement and have supplier's acknowledgement.

Once the right supplier is chosen then your next risk could be not making sales. To prevent this you need to find top keywords and optimize listing well and use promotional tools. Most importantly track your and competitor's listings to gather vital business intelligence. You can do that with the help of Amazon products tracking software.

In the end, there are risks of returns and refunds but then again if you find the right supplier then you might prevent it in the first place.
