First of all I would like to say one should not buy a large quantity by any virtual site. In this case you can Open LC to the supplier. I believe most of the Alibaba supplier accept LC. you can any a small quantity by online site. Thank you very much.

It is safe if you know what you are doing. Order samples for testing. Look for reputable companies. Do not import branded items.

Go with FOB terms. Have a freight forwarder do the transport.

      BEWARE of Alibaba's Trade Assurance.

If you want to use it to obtain some protection, make sure you understand all the rules. There are 16 A4 pages of them, and those16 pages don't show all the rules.

To find the rest of the rules you will need to search Alibaba's HELP CENTER.

All those rules provide a huge number of loopholes for sellers and if you make a claim, there is a good chance that it won't succeed because you have broken one of the rules.

to all those who insist that paypal is the way to go, I disagree. I have purchased many times from Alibaba and the time I had an issue and could not get it resolved was when I paid with paypal, I had a problem with the merchandise and since I paid with paypal Alibaba could do nothing and paypal refused to do anything because it was an international transaction, so I was out the money. My other trade assurance purchases were fine.

Yes, Alibaba is safe. Just be vigilant when transacting to suppliers and make sure that you choose those suppliers that have high percentage of positive feedback before making a purchase.

Alibaba don't suggest relying on feedback when choosing a supplier. There is a very good reason for that, and it is that there are thousands of fake feedbacks on Alibaba.

In any case feedback can only be left by buyers who have had cover by Buyer Protection or Trade Assurance. See post #11 above regarding Trade Assurance.

Alibaba is really safe. You can be sure that if you do not receive the goods, your money will be refunded. In which country are you living? It may take up to 20 days to get your goods delivered.

If Alibaba is really so safe, why are there so many bad reviews published? You most definitely can't be sure your money will be refunded and that applies to Trade Assurance. See my post #11 above.

Of the 480 Reviews on https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/alibaba.com 305 of them give only a 1 star rating and many of them say that even 1 star is too many. A lot of the bad reviews tell how Alibaba's Trade Assurance favors the seller and the buyer never gets their money back.

But I know most people will ignore the warnings, even though questions and answers like this one below appear on the review sites:

      "Question:
How safe is this site for a big purchase
      Answer:
If reading the reviews does not answer your question then nothing I say will have any effect at all on what you think. If you have read these reviews and you buy from this website then you must want to lose all your money, therefore it would be a better idea to give it to a worthwhile charity."

I have taught hundreds of people how to safely source products from China and other countries and only one of them has ever been ripped off. That was because he broke all the rules I set out in my book.

We've had suppliers from Alibaba. We only deal with gold suppliers, has trade assurance, onsite checked, and assessed supplier logos. Some suppliers offer free samples too. After we chose a potential supplier, we even visited their factory and the sales person we spoke with on Alibaba even arranged a transportation for us from the hotel to their location.

If you can't visit, just deal with trusted suppliers with those logos.

That is a ridiculous exaggeration. There is no need to avoid operating a business simply because there are scammers around.

I have taught many hundreds of new importers how to source with safety.

They know the risks because I have taught them. They also know how to avoid almost all of the risks because I have taught them.

Unfortunately most people seem willing to take unnecessary risks. That is why there are so many thousands of people being scammed.

A little education can save a lot of money.

EXAMPLE: How many think that a Gold Supplier badge on Alibaba is evidence that the supplier is trustworthy? IT IS NOT.

    Hello

I can't say about AliBaba but I have purchased from AliExpress which is owned by AliBaba and my experience has been satisfactory.

If you plan to purchase in small quantity, go for AliExpress and if in lots, then AliBaba. Its very safe and their buyer protection policy ensures that your money doesn't go anywhere. So, you can buy from them.

I wish people would only post when they know the facts, or at least have read some previous posts, where the question of safe or not has been properly dealt with. Are they too lazy to do a little bit of reading?

I have been exporting since 1978 and started importing in 1987. How does that compare with the experience of all those who in this thread have said Alibaba is safe?

I just read several reviews of Alibaba on a review site and they dont sound good at all. Customers feel they've been scammed But it 's all possible that it's rather the vendors that are the problem.

Yes, as @agmccall and @kayme both point out, it is the suppliers that you have to worry about.

There is a widespread ignorance about B2B sites. People seem to believe that they are buying from Alibaba, GlobalSources etc., but they are not. They are buying from suppliers that advertise on those B2B sites.

Lack of thorough verification by most of the B2B sites does contribute to the problem by convincing people that fancy badges mean the suppliers are trustworthy.

Alibaba and others have disclaimers on their sites telling buyers that they must do their own due diligence, but people rarely read such things.

I received a notification that member Motivation Vault had replied to this thread. Only part of the post was shown, but sufficient to tell that it was about an unhappy experience with a supplier found on Alibaba.

The post appears to have been deleted but the subject of this thread is important, so I will add an update on what is happening with Alibaba.

Their rules change frequently. In one year there were three occasions when the Trade Assurance rules were changed, and there are also now differences in the status badges displayed by suppliers.

Regular users of the Alibaba site might have noticed that almost every supplier is now a Gold Supplier. I will explain below, but first, just think about that.

The Gold Supplier badge has as a result of this change, lost any value it might have ever had in helping buyers choose who to deal with. If every supplier you find is a gold supplier, they must all be trustworthy, reliable, and great to deal with - Right? No... you now have a much harder job working out who to buy from.

Q: Why is almost every supplier now a Gold Supplier?
A: In their move to make masses of money out of selling Gold Supplier badges, Alibaba made a new rule that only Gold Suppliers could respond to request for quotes.

This means that you cannot contact non-Gold Suppliers unless you can find their website. It can be done in a lot of cases, but it is against Alibaba's rules for suppliers to communicate outside of the Alibaba communication system.

If anyone has questions about safely dealing with suppliers on Alibaba, I suggest you have a look at my thread Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here.

It is possible to buy safely from some Alibaba suppliers, and I have taught thousands of people how to do it.

If you want full and true information on what all the status badges on Alibaba mean, you can ask the questions there and I will happily explain.

Yes, Alibaba is completely safe for purchasing wholesale products. But as the fellow members said above, don't give a large order. It will be wise to choose a wholesaler from where you reside. Moreover there are various options available from whom you can trade with safely like Walmart, 4Imprint, PapaChina, Zuppe, AbraWholesales etc. These are safe options to trade with.

@lucycarter, did you read the post that is directly above yours? It shows good reasons why buyers have to be extremely careful when buying from suppliers on Alibaba.

Do you know anything about the suppliers you say are safe? How many people on this forum do you think are interested in the highly risky business of importing Alcohol, Tobacco, Soft Drinks, Confectionery, Grocery, OTC Medicine, Toiletries, and Cleaning Products?

To all other readers I say, to answer the question, have a look through this thread and read my posts. I have been importing since 1987, mainly from China. I know exactly how the system works and my answers tell you the facts.

I don't have to go online and search for a list of wholesalers that I know nothing about. At least read my post #24 where I wrote that I wish people would only post when they know the facts, or at least have read some previous posts......
