Hi

If I use a hosted shopping cart that is PCI-DSS compliant still need to instal a SSL certificate?

    Yes, a SSL certificate is important, as your cart's checkout should be secure, whether it's a shared SSL or dedicated SSL.

    PCI-DSS ensures that the cart follows the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, which is a set of security standards designed to ensure that ALL companies that accept, process, store or transmit credit card information maintain a secure environment. Having SSL is the key for that.

    Depends on the cart and who your processor is. If you use Shopify, all of their sites are already https and have an SSL included. With other platforms, you can use their shared SSL on the checkout pages but the rest of your site will not be https.

    If your payment processor is PayPal Express, you don't need the SSL because people are taken off-site to make their purchases. Again, though, you would not have a whole site that is https.

    Bottom line: If you want to do it the easiest way, stick with Shopify.

    The reason I've asked this question is because I was to use an ecommerce platform
    I was trying but they charge £89 a year for a ssl certificate and we couldn't use our own ssl.

      I guess you just have to ask yourself if it is worth a quarter of a pound a day to keep everything in place and weigh that against moving the site somewhere else. If it already ranks for things, I would definitely keep it right where it is instead of moving it to Shopify, where you have no control over the URL file structure.

    but the site is not live yet, I have been just playing with the free trial from
    some platforms.

    I am now trying Shopify and I am finding it really easy to use, probably will set with them.

      Providing that Shopify does everything you need it to do (it usually does), that certainly sounds like your best course of action with a brand new website.
