Manufacturer just asked for the delivery port

So the manufacturer just asked for my delivery port. I'll be selling the product on Amazon but the sample will be sent to my address in Israel and I already gave him living address.

Should I just give him the name of my main airport or is there a specific number I should provide? Moreover, when selling on Amazon. What is the delivery port, I should provide?

    Just ask what he means by port, and surely it can't be airport. If he is shipping you a sample they usually do it by DHL which takes about 5 days. The thing I think of when you say "port" is the one for ships not airport.

    He is thinking further down the track to the time when you place a full size order, and wants to give you a quote. If he is asking you to state which port, he no doubt expects that the size of your order will warrant sea freight as the most economical option.

    You should have obtained that quote long before placing an order for a sample, so either you or your supplier has failed to take the proper steps.

    A sample shipped via air courier will go through whichever airport the courier service finds most convenient and there is no point in you nominating a port. Tell the supplier you want pre-paid door to door air courier service for your sample.

    Ask your supplier to quote you on an FOB basis. He will then identify which Chinese port the goods will go through. The shipping arrangements for FOB are your responsibility once the goods arrive at the port in China.

    Many Chinese business people don't properly understand FOB, and might quote you something like FOB factory, which is in fact not FOB, but is EXW (Ex Works)

    Depending on the size of the shipment, any of the three shipping methods might be best: Air Freight, Air Courier, or Sea Freight. You will need to get quotes from freight forwarders in Israel. It is risky to rely on your supplier to organize freight other than Air Courier.

      I'm going to sell on Amazon and first. Since I didn't pay for any fancy guru course. I learn on the go.
      Have to say, the whole shipping part, got me a bit confused.

      As far as I understand. FOB means the moment the shipment arrives by sea freight. I have to pay and organize everything else to have it delivered to my home or the needed warehouse.

      Is there a tutorial you can direct me to, so I can properly learn who's against who?

        No, FOB means Free On Board. Strictly speaking that happens when the goods cross the ship's railing, but it is used more loosely now to mean when the shipment is loaded on whatever transport is being used.

        That can be ship or aircraft.

        NEVER have a shipment sent that doesn't have all costs included all the way to your door. The supplier will probably quote you FOB, and it will name a port or airport such as Shanghai.

        You are then responsible for all risks and costs from the time the goods are handed over to your carrier at that port. This is why you need to get quotes from freight forwarders in your destination country.

        They will need to know:
        1. Type of product.
        2. Quantity
        3. Package size
        4. Package weight
        5. FOB cost charged by your supplier
        6. FOB location stated by your supplier
        7. Delivery address
        There are a lot more things you need to know, but I can't tell you all of it online. It takes me approximately 130 pages to explain it all in my book.


        At least read through my AMA and search for other posts under my Warrior name Importexport. Without a reasonable amount of knowledge your are taking a big risk.


        I had one small newbie importer write: "You have saved me $3,000." I myself lost a lot more than that to a freight scam when I first started many years ago.
