eCommerce question: how to encourage customer ratings/reviews

How do I encourage my customers to give ratings/reviews (hopefully positive) without breaking any rules within eBay, Amazon, etc...

What is the best way to go about this without being annoying in emails and such.

    Ebay doesn't seem to have a policy regarding feedback. You can even send a free gift and/or ask for positive feedback apparently.

    Amazon, on the other hand, specifically states that you cannot ask for positive feedback nor can you offer a free gift in exchange for feedback (positive or negative). You can send a free item and ask for an unbiased review of that item after they receive it. You can also solicit unbiased reviews of any product sold to a customer.

    Sorry, but the only way to really get these type of reviews is by email follow-ups. Send an email after the product is received, telling them that you are eager to get their opinion of your products and services in order to improve your company and the experiences of its customers. Then ask for a review of the product, the website, customer service (if applicable) and the overall buying service. We send them automatically after every purchase and probably 1 out of every 20 people take the time to complete the review.
