    You might get a temporary boost from top-notch sites but eventually those press releases are buried and the rankings go away.

    IMHO, press releases should only be used to announce something very timely and they should only be used for brand awareness and perhaps driving some traffic for a very limited time. They are not a good long term SEO strategy.

    Press release is one kind of announcement to aware people about updated news about products & services of the company or organization. Yes, it will help your e-commerce website too especially when the site is new or launching something new.
