Phone or Digital Camera?

I guess it depends. for ebay I guess regular shots would be OK but if I were to have an ecommerce site or sell on amazon I would take more professional pics. There are many tutorials on youtube. also the cooking site pinch of yum has a product where they teach you how to take great food pics. I would imagine this could be used for non food products as well

I agree, the more professional the pictures look the more likely they are to convert a "looker" into a buyer. The quality of the pictures is usually one of the first things that catches my eye even if I don't necessarily think about it.

I'd have to agree with you. When I'm looking at pics on eBay or online merchants, the little things matter. A good picture at least shows you they pay attention to detail and really care about their products and services. They say a picture can speak 1,000 words. That is true.

I use a Samsung Galaxy 6, usually transfer them straight from phone to Ebay.

On a side note - I do use a light box since reading a thread in the Warrior Path, about selling on E-bay. Hope that helps!

It helps a lot. I'm not very techie, so I don't even know how to transfer images from my smart phone to my computer. I'll look into that. It seems like it would be a lot faster just to take pics with your phone and upload them immediately to eBay: one less step in the process.

For eBay you can definitely get away with just pictures from a phone, for an eCommerce website I would use a nice digital camera with the proper setup. I am a believer in that high quality pictures helps with conversion rates.

I think social media photos are fine with a cell phone. My colleagues and I prefer using a higher quality camera for website photos though. Cell phones take great photos, but you can still tell the difference. Having said that, a professional can optimize cell phone settings and use photoshop to convince the masses. You can fake resolution though, especially if you want to doing any zooming.

We use a combo including constructing 3D renders of products but phone is definitely quicker and you can combine some well lit shots on your phone with a neat bit of kit called remove.bg and you can get a pretty good image fast on a white background.

Remove is getting better and better and so are phone cameras so if you are pressed for time it is quite a quick workflow.

To my surprise, my iPad 2017 is putting out much better pictures than a 4K Sony Camcorder, which appears to dislike all forms of natural light, softboxes and LED panels, regardless of settings.

Maybe I shouldn't have banked on a camcorder being any use for pictures indoors, though I didn't think that expectation was too high for a £800 piece of kit.

My iPhone is only used on the golf course when I predict a hole-in-one. Pending.

A DSLR camera can never be outperformed. For a website or a big sized flyer, you need more pixels, and a DSLR will deliver that. An iPhone xs or Samsung s10+ does take excellent photos no doubt.

But if you want to come out as a professional and sell more "wow" you ought to hire someone to take good photos with their high-end gear.

He is selling on Ebay a market that people are looking for the best deals. By the time he pays someone he most likely will loose money. Considering the Ebay fees and shipping and handling. Agreed, but I was only suggesting if that could be an option. And it is not required to get a high end gear, you could do fine with entry level dlsrs too. But hey smartphone can do that and much more. I agree.

Smartphone, definitely smartphone. Considering how easy it is to set them up to capture amazing pictures and video content, and add to it some of the newest improvements in smartphone camera capabilities, I can say that the trend of using smartphones for capturing amazing pictures and videos will continue to rise whereas digital camera use will continue to decline.

I appreciate everyone's insights. I've seen some beautiful photos taken by smart phones, and some bad ones. My wife and I use a six or seven year old digital camera for our eBay photos, and she also does a few on her smart phone. They look fine to me, but they are by no means magazine quality.

In today's world, I rarely, if ever, see anyone using a digital camera. Most people just use their phone.

Either Cannon or Samsung in my book, go visit your nearest Best Buy and check out what they have. You can find plenty of high quality DSLR's at the Geek Squad. Purchased a Samsung a few years back thought they were good.

But went to Best Buy about a 2 months ago and they had some pretty nice Cannon''s on sale. Depends on the Bells and Whistles you want. Even get one of their sales people show you the difference. Just my .02

Put yourself in the position of the buyer and think what do you want in the product preview?
Personally, I prefer to use digital camera. High-quality pictures create a professionality feel to buyers which make them more likely to buy the product. It is even more important when you transfer cart from regular platforms like woocommerce to more professional one like magento and shopify
Search google some tutorial on how to take good product pictures, it will help

I would definitely say use a digital camera, provided it is a new model. They update them very frequently so one even a few years old might be poor-er quality than say a new iPhone. However, the Huawei takes incredible quality pictures I'm talking professional, high-quality looking photographs of people. But aside from that particular phone I would say digital camera is the way to go. If i'm purchasing a product online, be it a used phone, vehicle or clothing, one of the first things that grabs my attention is the picture. If your item is a lower quality picture than the one right next to it, guess which one i'm going to click on first. I would say getting the best quality photo on your ad is very important.

I use both. Smartphones nowadays have some serious tech and can almost go side by side with DSLR now. Smart phones are pretty good on the go. No need to bring about a lens and kit. Both android and IoS platforms offer great images. Editing can be done quickly as well. But don't expect the full quality picture a DSLR can offer. Shooting in RAW with the right gear and lens will work wonders for your product.

It all depends.. if you don't have a camera because maybe you aren't able to afford one just yet, you can always use a cellphone. Phones like iphones have really good camera quality to utilize in due time until you are able to invest in a camera.

It all depends on your budget since people are shooting even music videos with their phones. Digital cameras and DSLRs are also available for cheaper or you can buy used ones on ebay.
