?? advice given by forum members regarding ECommerce choices?

Hi,

so I've be perusing the forum reading advice regarding ecommerce choices. I was about to sign up with BigCommerce but, although I see it listed relatively consistently as one of the top choices, I never see it actually recommended.

My interest in it stems from its ability to utilize a hosted central database and access that database from multiple storefronts and or social media campaigns.

That said, I am starting with setting up a boutique storefront for my wifes pottery business to diversify it from Ebay. It is a very small business at this point and certainly does not require BigCommerce. My understanding is that I can populate her Ebay store from BigCommerce.

I see her store as the first step though and plan on experimenting with wide range of products utilizing the share database.

I've used WooCommerce on a project in a significant way but it was maybe 7 years ago and although I liked it, I found it was very time consuming to setup. I know I could do a central database on my own server but I am not a database guy and lack the time to become one.

So why do you not suggest BigCommerce? Am I off base in my perception?

Thanks

In recent times on this forum there is only one member on this forum that I know of that helps people with eBay and that is savidge4.
$40 to $250 in hopefully 30 days on eBay

Traffic wise I recommend Michael Meaney's thread:

BigCommerce is one of three shopping cart platforms we recommend in our course. If it works for you and you understand it, keep using it. I wouldn't worry about what other people are using and why. The vast majority of them have completely different needs than your business does and customers couldn't care less what shopping cart you are using.

hi guys, thanks for the replies.

My point was that although it is commonly mentioned as one of the best by peeps on WF I rarely see anyone on WF recommend it. In fact based on my searches I never saw it recommended once.

Was just curious why that might be.

Pretty much every time I mention shopping carts in threads, BigCommerce is one of the ones I have mentioned. I guess you haven't come across many of my posts - at least when discussions of shopping carts are involved.

You also have to keep in mind that an extremely large percentage of people on this forum fall into two groups - ones doing things as cheaply as they can and who are using WooCommerce because it save them a few dollars per month (not a good idea for eCommerce sites).

The other group is the one following the latest eCommerce fad - the Facebook/Shopify/Oberlo one. That model is becoming quite over-saturated and it absolutely depends on Shopify. Shopify owns Oberlo, so you can't do that model without using Shopify.

Well you guessed wrong. Among my searches I searched on your user name and you do exactly what I am questioning, that is you consistently list it as one of the top 3 but you never recommend it.

Like many others on WF, you have on several occasions listed it as an option and then made a point to recommend people avoid it without giving any fleshed out explanation of why, hence this thread.

Anyway it was just something I noticed. I got a number of replies on another forum to the same question so I've moved on.

In your research, is there one of the three that you see that I consistently recommend? Probably not. The reason is, no eCommerce solution is perfect. There are great things and annoying things about every single one of them and sometimes the annoying thing(s) simply makes it an unworkable solution for some websites. I don't recall telling someone to avoid BC but I may have for a single particular website in one thread based on that person's specific needs and the type of site it was (or even their supplier situation).

The best solution is to take advantage of the free trials every shopping cart platform has and decide for yourself which one best meets the needs of the particular website you are building. We use all three of the ones I have mentioned (Shopify, BigCommerce & 3DCart) because different sites have different needs and some shopping carts are better than others at addressing those specific needs.
