Niche product in boating needs marketing suggestions

Hi everyone.

I am very new to e-commerce.
We have a niche product in boating. We sell an additive for any boat bottom paint to reduce haul outs which could save thousands of dollars.

I created a shopify store and did some advertising in boating magazines. Tried Facebook ads as well.

Didn't really work. Just sold 2 in 3 weeks.

My question is what else can I do to promote this product? There is no competition so it is all about marketing. But as I said.... I have no idea how to do it.

Maybe your experience might help.

Thank you,
Patrick

I would think that active, non-spammy participation on boating forums and groups would be a far better way of establishing credibility and some buzz about your products. That, and sending free samples to people who review such things for the boating community.

    Sounds like a good idea.

But most of the time people see this as spam. But I will give it a try definitely.

    Thank you.

Have you searched " how to paint the bottom of a boat "? ( https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=...4dUDCAc&uact=5 )

Does an article you have written show there? Do you have content for freshwater, and salt water applications? do you have videos on how to remove the old and apply the new? There are simply so many types of media you could be presenting, to create an audience of people that would buy your product.

As I said it is an additive for any bottom paint. But it sounds like a good idea to create a video how to remove the barnacles and then how to paint the bottom of the boat even if there are already many videos out there.

No. Don't know what it is. Never heard of it.

    Hello Patrick

I have an idea for you, as long as the product is your own.

When we were on a holiday to Hawaii about 4 years ago, my Daughter Sherri who was 18 then, discovered a Hair Care product being sold by a small company, but only to the American market. On our return to England she started talking with them to gain the UK rights. She eventually made a deal with them for sole UK distribution rights.

We use our own online magazines for affiliate marketing and Sherri has 2 magazines catering to young women, so her first sales were to her subscribers via Ads in her magazines.

Then she decided to try selling wholesale to Hair & Beauty Salons, so now instead of selling 1 unit at a time she could sell and ship by the carton.

She mailed out one full size sample bottle to each Salon, gradually covering the whole of the UK. Within a few months she was selling hundreds of units per week, now it is thousands per month.

You could try a similar plan, selling wholesale to outlets that sell boats. If your product works it is an add on sale for them, and it is bulk recurring sales for you. It is also a sale that could bring their customers back into store more frequently. Also recurring sale for the boat outlets, so you push those points.

Another advantage is the boating outlets have credibility with their customers, where you don't. If they recommend your product, talk about it in Newsletters, hand out Flyers and so, on the word can spread quickly. After you get a reasonable number of outlets stocking your product you can also drop their names in your own PR efforts, so another way of piggy backing off their established credibility.

Anyway, let me know what you think and if you have any questions just ask.

    Cheers
    Lindy
