Hello folks, I'm a complete newbie with a tight budget but really interested in dropshipping.

I have like about $500 or more (but not too much) to get started. Should it be enough for Shopify or else do I need to find a cheaper solution because to my research, the add-on fee might be a burden.

Really need to hear y'all advise. Thanks in advance

That should be more than enough.

  • That should be more that enough. You don't hold inventory so no capital expenditure.

Your only costs are advertisements. Test advertisements ROAS before scaling up.

I ran a dropshipping store from Feburary 2016 to May 2017. My store was profitable (80-95% profit margin) every month during this period.

Dropshipping is very competitive and highly over-saturated in 2019.

I would not personally attempt dropshipping at this point in time.

Most gurus won't show you their real numbers for profits on Shopify in 2019, because they either aren't selling or selling at a loss.

OK, so you failed - undoubtedly running a website that sold the same easy to get Chinese stuff that everyone else could get - therefore, everyone else will fail because of "over-saturation" and because you couldn't figure out that selling easy to obtain products invites competition.

How about this? ... Start selling well known, real brands' products that people actually search for and want. Of course, that will take more work trying to convince big brands to let you market their products. You'll hear a bunch of "nos" and the weak will give up. Perserverence does pay off. Those who keep plugging away will eventually find a supplier, and then two and eventually, some of the companies that initially said "no" will come on board.

When it takes that much work, that much resolve, that much persistence, that much salesmanship, the wannabe competition drops out pretty quickly.

And, I'm not sure what Shopify has to do with your failure. It's an ecommerce platform just like BigCommerce, Shift4, WooCommerce and a host of others.

Finally, not only will most "gurus" not show you their proof, neither will anyone who has a successful online store. The dumbest thing you can do in this industry is reveal your successful product niche. No wonder you experienced such unsurmountable competition if you were telling people what you were selling to make so much money.

Head to our websites for sale section and you'll see a lot of websites that are killing it - almost all of which are dropshipping.

Anyway, no loss. The more people who think they can't do it, the less competition there is for the rest of us.

    Hi Thomas

Welcome to the forum. Shopify is the easiest to use for ecommerce. Not a massive learning curve either. Whatever product you choose make sure your margin is sufficient to cover ad fees and Shopify costs.

  • Honestly, this is plenty.
In Shopify you could also add apps to help you with marketing. Apps like Twik cost 9$ a month, and help your website conversions.
Shopify is an incredible tool that provide you with a ready to go website with minimal costs, and the extra apps are there to help you make it more profitable so you can cover your expenses pretty quick.
