I have a general ecommerce site and the search volume is high for product related keyword. But one SEO guy says "don't build backlinks for product page instead write blogs build backlinks for those blogs and interlink blogs with relevant product pages".

Is that a good advice? Or I should create backlinks directly to product pages?

Maybe they dont read blogs, but shouldn't we write valuable content for google to rank us high by leveraging topical authority? But the main question remains "should we create backlinks for product page or not"?

Backlink building of homepage always help to get good DA PA of your site and also helps to get traffic but if you want to rank your product pages than you have to build backlinks for them too.

Forget SEO for a moment... generally speaking a product page will not have the needed information for the end user to make a purchase - with one exception, and that is the point a buyer is committed to buying and actually going to make the purchase.

there are steps before this ( for the end user ) that as I practice I target with content. Details of the item, a comparison of the item against other like items, and the after purchase information of the item - how to set up, how to use, tips, repair info etc.

So back to SEO, I concentrate on getting them to my site earlier in the buyers cycle and providing as much content to the item itself and these are the pages I will backlink. The product page itself, not so much.

You need to do both, but smartly.

Direct backlinks to product pages are powerful when done right, especially if the product keywords have real buying intent.

The problem is most product pages aren't "linkable assets" ...they're usually thin, low-value pages. That's why SEO guys tell you to buffer through blogs.

    Here's the real move:

    • Build foundational backlinks (directories, niche edits, supplier links, brand mentions) straight to your product pages
    • Build content backlinks (guest posts, authority blogs) to top-of-funnel content
    • Use internal linking like a sniper to drive authority from those content pages into your product pages

Direct links + internal flow = product pages that actually rank and make money.

If you only blog and interlink, you're relying on a very slow trickle. If you only direct link without quality, you risk looking spammy. Blend both the right way and you'll move a lot faster.

Yeah, thats actually pretty common advice and its not bad, depending on your situation.

Product pages can be tough to get backlinks for naturally, since most people dont want to link directly to something thats just selling stuff. Thats why a lot of SEOs suggest creating blog content that's valuable or interesting (like guides, comparisons, tips etc.) building links to those and then using internal links to pass authority to your product pages.

That said, if you can get legit backlinks directly to product pages (like from niche blogs, reviewers or manufacturers) go for it. Just dont do spammy link building there,it tends to be more risky.
    Hope that helps!

Yes this is good advice because blog backlinks look more natural and safer.
From blog pages you can pass link juice to product pages through internal links.

Do it if you can snag a good backlink straight to a product page, like from a review site or a product roundup! Just steer clear of those spammy backlinks that go right to sales pages--they don't usually work well for SEO and can come off as fake.

Getting backlinks to your product pages can be a bit tricky. Many sites aren't keen on linking to pages that seem like sales ads, and Google usually likes links that feel more natural and editorial. A better approach is to create helpful blog posts about your products, get backlinks to those articles, and then link back to your product pages.

That way, your product pages gain credibility in a way that feels more organic and is friendly to Google. So, focus on getting links to your content first, and let that content help your product pages through internal links. It's a more straightforward and safer way to go about it.

The advice to build backlinks primarily to blog post rather than directly product page is good choice for E-Commerce SEO. Blogs with valuable content attract more backlink because they provide answer to buyer's question. Product page usually lacks the content.

Make a balance strategy. Write a high quality blog content focusing on user intent and keyword and interlink the blog with its relevant product page.
