Im thinking about starting a ecommerce website and im having a hard time trying to find a niche for the site. What type of ecommerce site do you think will be profitable in this economy? Based on demand, getting ranked in the SE for competitive Keywords, etc. And is a aged domain better, or start with a fresh domain?? And why did you pick the niche??

I would re-think those niches if I were you, since the competition is sky-high.
Only tip I have is start with something that you have good knowledge of.

There are certain things that people prefer to buy online in the privacy of their home rather than to walk into a shop. I think you are heading in the right direction with 1 and 3.

It's correct that people buy a lot of such things online but the competition is far to high in my hones oppinion. You can never forget to analyze your competition.

All of those niches are heavily saturated. You will need lots of money to make money in those niches. You are looking at getting the products first, you have to find a supplier who is either a wholesaler or a dropshipper. Your competition will have bigger budgets than you. Next you need to advertise your business to remain competitive. PPC is can be quite expensive and SEO is great but nothing is guaranteed when a new google update hits.

Don't get me wrong, there is quite a bit of money in all of those niches but you will have to work extremely hard and spend a good amount of money to have success in those niches.

If i was you, i'd checkout ebay and amazon and see what kind of products are selling and their prices. Next, try to find a dropshipper/wholesaler that offers these products. See what prices you can get and if there is an actual profit margin. Then setup your online store, i'd recommend that you get a yahoo! store, people tend to trust those the most. After you have setup your store, open an ebay account and use ebay as a way to get people into your online store.

If google still has a market place for you to put your products in, then get your products listed into google shopping. This business can be demanding but it can workout well if all the pieces come together.

      Good luck!

The sunglasses niche is so saturated. I use to sell sunglasses on ebay and the competition is very fierce on there. If people want sunglasses most will visit ebay and find hundreds of sellers selling the same thing. I just did a research and found close to 400,000 listings for sunglasses.

I just used the google adwords keyword tool and the exact searches are below:

            [sun glasses]

            -High

            global searches-22,200

            local searches-9,900

That looks pretty decent, compared to other niches like adult toys or lingerie or even kids toys, were the searches are 90K and above....

Eco friendly and organic products are going to do better. Survival seeds are another hot niche to get into right now with recent droughts and economic uncertainty. ;-)

    WHAT ABOUT THESE NICHES :

    1. Kids Toys
    2.Gift Shop
3.Perfume & Cologne (Brand names at discounted prices)

Again, stiff competition unless you dig deeper into those niches. For example, kids toys could be ok if you had specific age group or a particular type of toy.

Yea, i heard that numerous times. I did a keyword search using the google adword tool and put in kid toys and the exact search per month was at like 1600 global monthly searches..i thought that was kind of good and prolly easy to rank for with some good SEO

Once again I think you'd bite off more than you could chew if you ventured into these niches. Have you thought of maybe going "deeper" into the niches, for example: "Kids Toys" could be "stuffed animal toys" etc. That way you will cut down on the competition whilst still keeping a rather wide customer base. Hope you understand what I ment even though the example wasn't brilliant

I had a gift shop site, candles, small toys, plates, you name it, it was there, done it through a drop ship company, I gave up as sales were slow, competition to high for words like "gifts, gift shop" etc and not enough profit from drop ship co.

There are lots of issues to think about besides popularity and competition with e-commerce.

    1. Profit margin - this varies enormously between different sectors
    2. Average profit per sale - you may not be able to use PPC and other advertising if you only make a few dollars per sale. Also, your shop will not be that attractive to affiliates.
    3. Weight and shape of items - how much shipping cost will be involved.
    4. Brand name vs non brand name items - it will be easier to sell brand name items, especially for items that people would normally like to see and touch in a shop such as jewelry.
    5. Conversion rate - this again varies enormously between different sectors.

Based on my past experience as a merchant and now as an affiliate, I am against entering a niche that is too small and too narrow. I agree completely that it should be something that you have got some interest in.

Honestly I don't know. I know there are quite a few sellers from Hong Kong selling adult stuff on eBay. My old niche was electronics accessories and the margins were very low.

The thing about drop shopping is: are people going to find your website and want to buy from you when there's probably lots of other established businesses already selling what you can offer? (This is true for any new website selling anything) -- how to you break through that? This is something I've wondered myself, as I also have had loads of ideas re: selling/dropshipping but never bothered for those very reasons.

I dont think people care if the website is new or established. As long as you have a awesome site design, reasonable prices and looks secure and well put togather..they will buy. Im just finding it hard to pick the rite niche...

When trying to come up with niche ideas for an ecommerce store you should focus on product lines where the average order total is $100+. With dropship-based ecommerce stores you're rarely going to have one that makes more than a few sales a day, so you need to focus on "high margin per order" type products!

Yea..i just read that on a blog while searching google, and the guy said its a waste of time if your stocking products lower than $100 per item, cause you wont make any real money! Im looking into this now, to find a good niche!

Keep in mind that's in not necessarily profit per item, it's profit per order. For example, wedding invites may be just $3 each, but you'll rarely sell less than 60 per order. We cover this in pretty good detail in the 'Choose a Winning Niche' chapter of our free ecommerce training course!

Another thing to keep in mind is that you need to find a niche that's being overlooked by the big time retailers. Otherwise it will be very challenging to compete.

I doubt anyone is going to spill the beans on their profitable items - Youre on the right track with sorting out competition. Look closely at pg 1 of google and determine if you can outrank them. Can you do a better job? Can you offer more? Are the site weak info sites? If there are ecomm sites ranking how do their PR, PA and Link profiles look? (also their optimization for title and domain/url)
