How to find hot selling products to market on ebay

I recently started marketing on ebay. What I noticed is that, there's vast difference between selling your own products and getting products from other sources to sell.
The challenge mainly lies in what to sell. You may know all the tricks about selling on ebay; right caption, good description, keywords, etc, but if you're not selling the right product it just won't work.

Does anyone know a good resource out there, other than ebay pulse(you get a list of top search terms and not products) that can help find hot selling items on ebay?

And also, does anyone have any experience with any Good supplier out there that can be used for ebay dropshipping? No middle men involved?

Thanks

  • Bobafanu,

You might try just using the Google Keyword Tool or a similar program to see what trends there are. For example you could just type the word buy into it and see how many different related searches with that term pop up.

You could also use Google trends to compare product related keywords or words users might type in to find or buy these products,

    Google Trends

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn

I have experience with some drop shippers but they aren't good. None of them are very good, simply because it takes them 700 years to find a product and half of it is out of stock.

What you might wanna do is check out liquidation.com and see some hot wholesale deals, then go to eBay and see how that product sells by pieces and do the math. Keep in mind that eBay isn't really a good place to make money on because of the obnoxious eBay/PayPal fees (unless you you're a company that has connections such as buy.com)

From my experience, the best selling products are clothes and video games

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Shawn I'll give it a short.
Thanks Vadimarket, liquidation.com is a great site, I've checked them out. That just won't work with the concept of dropshipping, where you don't want to handle the products but ship them directly to the buyer.

One product can be good for me and bad for you. eBay pulse just show super hot items and you will not make money selling something really popular. There are many products that can be sold with huge profit but they never will be published on eBay pulse.

You can check this video I created and learn more how to find good products fast:

Everyone who sells on eBay has the same problem. The prices are so low it is very hard to compete. I was able to find a local supplier and pick up my orders at the manufacture's office. This helped me with pricing,

I hope you find what you are looking for.

ebay just opened a new service where they do all the work and you get 70% of the sale.

on the intro page of that service the hot trends are listed.

stuff like old electronics and game consoles, clothing and asseccories, furniture, collectibles, old jewelry sell well. if you like to go to flee markets there you go. go to free areas online in classifieds, ect you'd be surprised about people giving stuff away.. Come and get it and you can have it. Stuff like that sells on ebay. Storage places let you bid for items. Search ebay use advanced search for items ending low you can relist again with better keywords and correct catagory. Do some misspelled item searches too these items usually end low.

Once again there are numerous posts appearing saying how low the margins are in dropshipping - So why do so many people persist in slaving away for a measly return on a dollars per hour basis? How much per hour do you want to make? I taught my former franchisees that they should not chase orders that could not make them $150 per hour.

I think people flock to dropshipping largely because of the myth about huge orders being required to buy direct from manufacturers. That myth is simply not true.

I have taught hundreds of people how to get genuine manufacturers to supply small quantities, even if they quote huge MOQs. The difference in profit margins between buying from dropship wholesalers and buying direct from the factory are MASSIVE.

The lowest margin my importing business worked on was 250% and it was often better than that. That margin was after all landed costs including door to door courier delivery or EMS. If my former franchisees did not make a margin of 250% they would have quit their franchise and sued me, but that never happened.

By using EMS and air couriers, the shipments arrive within a few days, so inventory can be kept low. This only works with generic products, although we very often had private labeling done, and still had the goods in store within 14 days.

You do not need lots of cash to start an importing business.

Man you need to get with a better legal entity for your franchise documents! No franchisee should ever be allowed to sue the franchisor for failing to profit or for profit margins. The burden of success and results lies solely on the franchisee, not the franchisor.

I signed up with a dropshipping service that sells tools for dropshipping to ebay, amazon or you can create your own ecommerce dropship website. The ebay tool sold a few products fairly fast. I upgraded and launched my website and now tweaking it. The downside is for purchases $300 or more, they require payment by wire transfer. Paypal only accepted for smaller orders. This slows down my delivery time to my customers.

I was bold enough and confident enough to include reference to profit margins in my franchise advertising material, so they did have the right to sue if I failed to deliver. I was not worried because I had a track record of getting higher profits than that 250% minimum over 5 years before I sold my first franchise.

I don't operate that business any more since I sold it when surgery that didn't go quite right forced me to retire, but the business is still going strong and all those franchisees in 4 countries are still making margins of at least 250%.

I don't guarantee that those who follow the methods in my book will do the same, because unlike with a franchise I have no control over how my book buyers conduct their business.

What I can say with confidence is that if you ditch the low margin dropship model and buy direct from real manufacturers your eyes will be opened to profit margins that you have probably never dreamed of.

One example published on WF by one of my students illustrates the point. They bought goods for $1 in China, spent another dollar on packaging, and retailed them for $25. Dropship resellers; eat your heart out.

A friend of mine runs a whole business on Ebay drop shipping. She has explained it to me numerous times and it sounds overwhelming to me (keeping track of all the fees, profits, stock of item, lists of suppliers etc). She's quite good with numbers, but she has thousands of products listed on Ebay! It's quite amazing.

I prefer to buy my products up front. I send them to Amazon FBA (fulfillment by Amazon). This is similar to drop shipping in that I don't touch (or usually even see) most of my products. The difference is that it requires an up front investment, but the payoff is BIG profits (as opposed to tiny drop shipping profits) and not being surprised by "running out of stock" (since I control this)

If you're willing to make an investment up front, I would recommend this method. The investment can really be as small as $100-$500. Hope this helps!

Seeds. Flower & vegetable seeds. Non-gmo. They're almost perfect. They're light, easy and cheap to ship and in demand. You can buy them by the pound and sell small quantities. Amazing profit potential. You might spend a day or two pre-counting and sorting your orders. Then when you make a sale you just reach for it, place it in an envelope and off it goes.

The only drawback is that you'll have lots of small dollar sales selling to the everyday consumer market. Still, the markup is amazing. It would be wise to offer some bulk along with the retail offers.

If you want to be one of the go-to sellers in the seed category produce a little bonus ebook about cultivating, best times to grow, soil, watering, the whole Farmer John gig. Have a nice cover made and put the pic in your auction. Have the ebook hosted online and send the URL to the buyer with the order. Easy peasy...

A couple of ideas - look up Skip McGrath's website. He is an experienced eBay and Amazon seller. He has lots of useful (mostly free) info on his site.

Also you may want to look into Amazon FBA selling. The prices are highr than on eBay. In fact I regularly buy items on eBay and than turn around and sell it on Amazon for a decent profit.

Drop shipping in general is a tough business - so many drawbacks.

However, setting up your own "exclusive" drop shipping arrangements is where it's at.

These are arrangements with manufacturers or producers of in demand products that don't currently sell their products on eBay and you set up an exclusive with them, thus you have no competition.

That's what kills you in drop shipping - the competition!

Also, there are some good eBay courses (with very unique / unusual money-making approaches to eBay) on Udemy.com, you can go there and search them.

If they are hot selling there's lots of competition slashing down each other's profits down to zero. Seek upcoming products popularised in countries that have a history of spilling popularity internationally.

  • Low margins generally mean high cost of labor.

Something I'd rather NOT do. No matter how much I steer people away from the dropshipping model, they still bang at my door begging me: "Yeah, but how do I DROPSHIP!"

Eventually, people will wonder: "Well, how can I increase my profits on these items?" My only consolation is that people who truly want to be successful will start somewhere, and end up selling items will astronomically high margins.

Like you ADE I have people constantly asking me if I can help them with dropshipping. Today was typical.

A Warrior in an EU country PM'd me because he wanted help to dropship because of limited cash availability. After I told him my book would not help, he responded, bemoaning the extremely low margins available by dropshipping, and telling me how little cash he could invest in inventory.

The amazing thing is that I have had people succeed in importing with about half as much cash as he has available.

When he gets to see the "astronomical margins" (as you correctly put it) that he can get, even when buying small orders direct from genuine manufacturers, he will wonder why he ever thought of following the low margin dropship model.

BTW don't you have a dropship course now?

Yeah, I do now. The demand for it was so high that I finally buckled down and made a course on it outlining how to actually do it correctly - not the 'fluffy way' that blows smoke and mirrors. But the actual trench-warfare way I did it at first.

Perhaps someday I'll put it in a sig link, but not right now. I just show people upon request. It's a brutal course - because when people succeed at dropshipping the correct way, my hope is that they someday think: "Okay, this is working, but how can I increase my margins" and then become more business savvy from there.

        Every starts somewhere, right?

I actually just started (within the last few months) offering a reseller program with one of my stores here in the U.S. (I do not ship internationally).
I have not really promoted it much, because I do not want too many people competing with each other (making it hard to sell).
Most of the products I sell have very little competition on ebay (since I do not sell there), and you should be able to make anywhere from 20%-40%.

IM me if you would like more information.

ok well.. though... see the thing about ebay/amazon with having a small quantity of a product is that unless you have a small quantity of a lot of products which then adds up, its hard to get your listening noticed. it seems to me that you have to have a lot of listening to get placed decently in the listings. Then getting stuck with a product you can't sell or return is painful.
