Is it really possible to sell merchandise on Alibaba.com even if I don't have a Gold membership and I don't have a real office? I mean, how is the buyer going to trust me if I don't have any of those? Doesn't he see this as a red flag?

Yes. But offer payments via escrow .com. You'll get more inquiries this way.

No problem as long as you are doing legit business. I purchased several products from non-gold members without any problem. Just make sure to be careful in making payment. Escrow is highly suggested.

This is literally how 99% of Alibaba works. There might be 1 factory that manufacturers wooden table legs in Changsha, Hunan, but there are 500 Alibaba accounts that say they manufacture wooden table legs in Changsha. The more experienced people/buyers on Alibaba have picked up on this and the fact that if you don't have an actual office, you don't actually have a relationship with the manufacturer, so why do business with you?

Hell, I've done business with middlemen who did have an office and I knew were just middlemen because they delegated the transaction well, and I'm all for transactions being simple/coordinated. However I've also started doing business with people who say they have an office and then are surprised when I show up with money in hand... and guess what, no office?

My advice, don't lie. It could actually get you into a bit of trouble. Just tell your buyers that you are an agent and do not have an office.

I used to be a broker for steel between buyers in the US, to which they sold to mills/foundries overseas. I was upfront with the buyers telling them that I'm just an agent, and I have sources for certain grades of steel which they were interested in.

Just as the above poster mentioned - be honest.

    Honesty is the best policy.
I did encounter dishonest sellers in alibaba but they do not get 2nd transaction and sometimes they do not even finish 1st transaction if I get the sense. Lately though prices in Alibaba has gone up and profit margin while reselling has gone down.

Some of items are way costlier and comparable to prices in USA/Uk. I was recently looking for marble fountains and noted that after paying for shipping, installing and all other headaches which go along with there was not much left on the table.

Are you guys having the same experience.

    thanks,

    Sid

Only difference is the reaction would be very strong and not equal i.e. good gets rewarded with lots of good and bad gets rewarded with lots of bad.....so watch your actions carefully...
