Guest Checkout or User accounts?

A user asked how she could create a login and password so her cart stays in tact between visits.

Do you believe having users sign up is better than pure guest checkout? (Guest is also anonymous on some sites)

Currently I host a pure guest checkout site.

  • It depends on the target audience really, on one of my current sites I'm running it so the user has to input and register on the website before a purchase.

The other downfall to the guest checkout is you do not collect all the customer information such as email/phone etc.. although sometimes it is possible to get this on the actual payment page.

best thing to do is run each one for a month and see what the results are and go with it.

    Good luck!
  • I Think Restringing a User is Better Option, It will Help You to Engage your Users to yoour site. It also helps you to manage the disputes with users regarding their Purchase.
  • From past experience, I have seen many people drop the cart at registration. I would highly recommend you have the guest checkout in your checkout process. Single page checkout (guest checkout) is faster and easier.

    Pros to guest checkout:
    -More conversions
    -Better page performance
    -Better customer satisfaction
    -Advanced interactivity
  • have a lot of returning customers? accounts..
but its always good to have both options for people who dont have time to signup

    • I have a ecommerce site and guest checkout is a must.
  • Both - guest and user registration should be available.

    • I am going to stick with a pure guest checkout for a while longer, I actually don't see a huge benefit to a customer signing up for a site. I see the merchant being the one who really benefits.

If I found out though that I can track abandoned carts by having them sign up this may be a useful marketing tool.

  • User Registration is better

  • I have couple of ecom site where I kept both guest checkout and customer registration and then checkout. But how I did was pretty simple. Once side I got it as guest checkout so that someone who doesn't want to put their details down to my site can actually buy the product straight out and at the same time incentive to customer registration: I kept the facilities to check their order status, delivery and other details can be checked and they can get into a monthly simple price draw if they sign up ( I do ofcourse send out freebies each month to keep it going )

    Kind regards,
    Swrajit
  • This issue was brought up again and again on a well known e-commerce forum I used to frequent. The consensus is that you should offer both. There will always be a number of people who prefer not to register for privacy reasons.
  • Having a log in is nice... especially if you plan on having lots of repeat customers.

    • Hi hondablaster,

I agree with activeseo, Anvilek, and derekwong28, why not offer both? Let your users tell you which option is preferred. Most shopping cart platforms allow you to offer your customers both registration and guest checkout, so let your customers tell you which they prefer by their own actions.
  • Having both the options available for the customer would be great. He could either use the guest checkout if he's in hurry or could register and use the account to shop quick later.
