How can you customize system
URLs in OpenCart? For example, I would like http://example.com/index.php?route=checkout/cart to be displayed as http://example.com/cart. I know OpenCart provides SEO URLs for products, categories,
manufacturers and information pages, but it doesn't look like
there is anything built-in (at least prior to version 1.5.0) for anything else. Am using the current version 1.5.4.1

There is an Opencart extension, called Opencart SEO Expert, that allows to easily change long urls to short ones, and also supports multi-language with URL prefixes:

You don't need any extensions to do this. There are three steps :

    1) Select the option to enable SEO friendly URLs in the Opencart settings.
    2) You will then need to rename the ".htaccess.txt" file to ".htaccess" (you can do this in your ftp program)
    3) Add the SEO keywords you would like in the URL for each product on the data tab when creating a new product.

Let me know if you have any questions.

      Lizzi,

In your scenario, how do you get rid of ?route=xxx/yyy URLs, and how to I get rid of duplicates in Google?
I suggested that extension because it has some value )

I think a 301 redirect, otherwise it should sovle itself.

For $28, I would hope it has some value.

But honestly, you don't need to pay for an extension to enable the SEO friendly URL option in Opencart. Follow the three steps above and it works perfectly.

I would only pay for an extension if it offers additional features that you cannot do easily yourself.

This is the correct answer. You don't need a specialized plugin to do it. There are just some settings that are described above that need to be changed. Youtube is your friend and it will walk you through making the changes. Heck, once you click the buttons in your open cart settings, some web hosts will even make the htaccess changes for you if you ask.
