How many of you run one or more ecommerce stores with a partner?

I have been thinking about the idea lately and want to know about your experience good/bad

For those of you who do have partners, where did you meet them? How is it working for you?

I would like to partner with someone I can meet with when needed that shares the same passion.

I have experience with ecommerce and run my own website.

I am in Newburgh New York myself.

I will tell you this, be very careful before you enter into a partnership. If you are a self-motivated individual, you will be far better off on your own. I am part of a global entrepreneur group and the most common problem that members I have talked to have encountered in their business has to do with a bad partnership situation.

I agree, a bad partner can be a nightmare and cost you everything.
If you need a partner, then be sure you work it out where you have controlling interest. Perhaps outsourcing or a va would be a better solution?

I agree with bad partnership..better to hire skilled worker than go into a partnership or seek for a company that have the skill you needed..

I have worked with partners in the past and I would recommend staying away from this option.

Whatever it is you feel that you're lacking you should find a way to hire someone to make up for it.

I had a partnered up on one of my websites for many years and we ended up having to sell it because we could not agree on how it should continue moving forward.

It was a constant headache and I made much less money that I should have.

I agree with all the comments above. A good question to ask yourself would be; "what is this partner going to bring to the table?"

Depending on the answer....can you accomplish the same thing by outsourcing and not having the headache of sharing the business.

Because once you go into a partnership, you can never easily get out of it. However, it's always easy to fire a bad employee

I agree and disagree - You can partner, but it really needs to be someone you know well and knows you well - and you really have to "be on the same page" as in what you are looking to do.... its a lot like a marriage, some work some don't....

  • Partner you never met with, partner you don't know much about, is a risk. Partnership can be broken any time over any excuse. You could get scammed by in term of money and business. If you can manage your business all by yourself, then trust on yourself.

If you do partner, make sure you have a written agreement of what happens under various circumtances. It's critical to get it on paper and not "figure it out cuz we get along". No partnerships get into trouble when you get along, they get into trouble when you dont get along and thats when you have to figure crap out.

    • I have a business partner that is a friend for my e-commerce site. I handle market and web design while he handles fulfillment and business side of the website.

As our site has grown from a few visitors to a few thousand visitors it has been really helpful to have someone to split the workload with.

Lucky you getting a friendly, trustworthy partner ! very rare to have a promising one. I'd ever want to hire people rather than having a partner.

If you can find a partner you trust whose skills complement yours for a project like this, it may be a good idea. (Exactly like purpleswizzleswirl's case).

But finding such a partner isn't all that easy though. Outsourcing may be a better option in that scenario, as others said.

    Best of luck!

    Great Points

The Major question you need to ask yourself are

What is he bringing to the Table? Money? Experience? Business?
Can you Outsource it without having a Partner?
What will be the exit strategy?
Why Him? Have you worked with him?
