How Many Items for Ecommerce Site

I am wondering how many items is a sufficient amount for an ecommerce site. I originally listed 186 products. These products were broken into categories and updated from time to time. Do you think that 186 products is too many? Too little? Or about right?

You can use 1 product, or 5 products.. The number doesn't really matter. First thing that matter is quality and the second is promotion.. If nobody sees your site then it doesn't matter if you have the best products on the planet because with zero traffic there will be zero buyers..

krnekdo..I understand the importance of traffic to the website. I am in the process of completing a more professional looking site. I have started SEO and have a PPC budget ready to use until I get rankings organically. The quality of the product is something I probably need to focus on more. I am just wondering if anyone has found a comfortable number of products to maintain or if it really matters as long as you are keeping track of inventories.

    1 or 1000

1 = If you have an unique product and it's awesome.
1000 = You have a collection product such as ebooks, articles, mobiles, ....

It strictly depends on a niche you work in.

You can have just one product if your work in a weight loss niche for example.

But if you sell kids clothing, you can't have just few items - your shop would look empty + there would be no choice for your customers to make.

I wouldn't go nor aim for a specific number, it all comes down to having specific products for a specific audience. When ordering online I actually find you sell better when you have a specific sites for a small range of products. This shows the customer (or at least implies) that your focus is in that category.

there no limited that's our freedom to sell many more products. Each and every product considered as a unique product page since the developers can charge to develop the site.

To be frank I'd have to say between 20-50.

Make sure your advertising those 20-50 products VERY well and present them perfectly!
Once you notice sales then start adding on to your catalog.

The amount of items you have in a shop really depends on what you're trying to sell. If I were selling shoes then I'd probably have many different shoes of different brands and colors. If I were selling Beats Headphones on the other hand, then I'd probably only have a few categories with different color variations of the item.

If you are asking from SEO point of views, Number of products on a Store Does not matters. It's not a SEO factor. Dont Worry and Add as Much as you Can.

I would say that the more products you have got, the more traffic you are likely to pick up from long tail keywords and thus to your site as a whole. My experience is that it does have a major impact on the traffic. This is probably why many e-commerce site leave discontinued items on their site. The key is to have good on-page SEO for each product.

One of the companies I am a director of has 12,000...Most of which are from stock!

Like people above have said it depends on your business model. But we have found that the more products we add and are able to offer, the bigger the average order value as people in our niche know all the brands.

Id say this allies to a lot of industries more range = higher average value but i something you need to test.

If I started again with 1 product from my bedroom, Id start with a well researched product and market the hell out of it! I did this with one branded piece of clothing a number of years back and was making £300 a day PROFIT at this time of year from that one but of clothing.

I also agree with Derek, the more you have the more organic traffic you get (especially with google Merchant centre as its still free here in the UK)

There is no maximum or minimum number of items specifications in listing products on an ecommerce site. As per what others said on this thread, it depends on your niche, how you do you SEO and drive traffic to create sales. Add as many as you can and categorize them for easy navigation..
