start with ebay store first, promote it as much as you can & then with the earnings you can have a free open source app that you can outsource to build a site....this is in case you have a very limited budget...

Are you going to be drop shipping items or do you have inventory?

        Are your prices competitive?

Is there high demand for your products?

If you can compete in pricing and your products are in demand AND you don't have to worry about putting up a lot of money for inventory (if you're drop shipping) I would recommend and eBay store AND an eCommerce store.

You can use your eBay listings to draw traffic to your eCommerce store and save on listing fees (ebays fees can be expensive).

        Good Luck!

I do both but am always trying to steer my ebay customers to my site, fortunately for me my product is something most customers do recurring purchases so rather than keep comming to me on ebay once they trust me and what I sell come to my site and save me the 10% I'm saving in ebay fees.

Problem being people dont like to crossover, people on ebay seem to like ebay and people who like my sit like my site, I don't often steer ebay people to my site but it does happen. Normally I'll have to take down all my ebay listings for a few days and either force people to buy from somoene else on ebay or follow me over to my site.

It's really not that much effort, it's alot of effort if you really want high google rank and everything but just in terms of operating an online store it's nto much more work than ebay. Once you have your store setup, products listed, etc it's just a few minutes to an hour each night packing and shipping orders. The time and effort comes with promoting your store and trying to get higher search ranking but that isn't something that needs to be done asap, run a store in conjunction with ebay and try to steer ebay people to the store

First of all where will you be selling? In your own country or are you going international? Secondly you should get some more funds in order to fight your way to some serious sales. Nobody will get huge profit in the first months of selling. You can also consider in having a partner to share the spendings.

My best suggestion to anewbie is to list on ebay firstly.thus, you will touch more customers easily in the beginning. coz building a new website and promote it to top page on google is not a easy thing.ebay is a repaid market which many customers would visit everyday. But if you have enough earn some money, you may try to pay more attention to the new site. we all know ebay is very expensive and about 10% profit is cut by ebay. Building a own online store is the final goal to many of us.including me.

Get started with ebay first. It has a huge international customer base that you simply cannot match by going it alone. As you sell items on ebay you build your own customer list. This list will ultimately be the starter customers to whom you will market once you're ready to build your own ecommerce site.

        Advantages of starting on ebay:
        • massive audience already visiting
        • relatively low fees to list merchandise
        • fulfilling your orders gives you an opportunity to build a rapport with the customers who will be the foundation for your own site some day
        • ebay has a ton of mature sales management tools as well as marketing and SEO tools ready for you to use at low cost or no cost
        • ebay has transaction systems in place with Paypal and distribution discounts with the US Posral Service and Fedex
        • ebay has a huge number of sellers who can provide good practical advice for any problems you are having

My advice is to think of ebay as your ecommerce starter kit, providing you with access to the tools, systems and audiences you will need to leverage once you are truly ready to start up your own site

so thats mean we do not have to promote our list, in that mean ebay just need a good market research?

Even if you are using Ebay, promotion is always appropriate. Ebay offers some SEO tools that enable you to assign key words to your offers. If you get deeper into Ebay, you will find that you can set up a store structure (not just put individual items up for sale), and that structure also includes features like newsletters, more SEO tools, and design features that make it easy to promote your items.

I have both an Ebay store and my own ecommerce site. After operating the Ebay store for two years, I had enough sales to justify the expense of my own site, and enough customers to market to when my site launched. This will not be an overnight event; it takes time. But in the end, you will know much more about your chosen niche and buyer preferences.

yes, ebay store would be a good choice for the beginners who don't have rich experience on target market, sale strategy and SEO skill. But once you have reached a high level.I think building a own website is very necessary.,Because of the high ebay fees will cut down the customer's profit too.or it mean you can earn more.

Start with eBay firs. It is easier and most importantly much cheaper. If you have your own online store you should do tons of marketing that is very expensive and it takes time. if you sell on ebay you have the marketing done by Ebay itself. Believe me it is worth the 12-15% they are collecting from each sell you made. You have to be really huge to justify the marketing you need to sell products online by yourself.

At this point in the life of eBay, I actually recommend buying a good domain name, and selling a niche of products.

Google recently stopped sending a LOT of traffic to eBay. Currently eBay sellers are experiencing 80% less sales than they normally do because Google is now sending 80% less traffic this quarter than they did last quarter. The money I now spend to advertise one single item through advertising through Google Shopping (which has changed from Google Product Search) is way better investment than I would be spending money on eBay fee's. For example, say I want to list a DEWALT DC970K-2

on Ebay, these go for $117.63 which is $104 after fees. I know this because I sold 3 of these in the last 3 months, and I am the cheapest for this item. On Google, it cost me less than my listing fee of .50 to advertise this item and I've sold 39 of these in the past 90 days for $137+ with no deduction of fees aside from my overhead which is like $5.00/mo for my eCommerce site (I was the cheapest for this item).

    eBay: $312 for this item
Google/Own Site: $5343 for this item minus about $75 I paid Google to advertise my item/.

That's really the difference between selling on eBay and Google at the moment. Years ago, and even months ago, this wasn't the case. But now there really isn't MUCH of a point in paying eBay 20% in fee's on a very competitive market place with very little true traffic.

Older Discussions of eBay early signs of drop of traffic which started earlier this year around summer. This is when I noticed a change in eBay sales across my accounts. I process 7 figures in profit each year from eBay across my accounts. Where a seller who sells $50,000 (gross) in items a year might say "Hey, I haven't sold anything in 3 days" and start to worry but it doesn't become much more than that. When you have employees, rent property in different countries, have partners that rely on you, you go from $4600 a day in sales to $1800 a day for a week, it Really grabs your attention.

Seller Shows Strange Traffic Pattern on eBay

The reason is because of Project Cassini which went live not too long ago, while at the same time, Google started progressing towards making the Google Shopping changes mentioned earlier in the year from what was "Google Product Search. "

Google Product Search To Become Google Shopping, Use Pay-To-Play Model

What happened before was that eBay was naturally submitting your feed to Google, so often an eBay sellers items and item pictures would show up in Google when a user would type in keywords that matched what you were selling. In early October, Google released Google Shopping and it started pushing eBay listings on to the 2nd and even 3rd pages of searches. With eBay's Cassini search, both of these things REALLY affected people and to this day, a lot of people are going from making 20 sales a day on eBay to now making 2 sales a day and people are starting to freak out. I have a theory that eBay is going to start deleting discussions from Sellers on the subject very soon. As it turns out, Google was behind a lot of eBay's traffic and now this really isn't the case. Most large sellers, including all of my large China based eBay selling accounts received about 80% of their traffic from good ol' Google.

Thank you for taking the time to respond so completely. I appreciate it. It caused me to review my own Omniture numbers for the past year on Ebay. Although some may have reported 80% declines in traffic for a certain period of time, I myself was not experiencing this phenomenon, probably for several reasons:
          • At certain key times when sales were flagging, I used email marketing campaigns to revive traffic
          • We are less susceptible to the changes in Googles commercial listings strategy because we sell one-of-a-kind dyed linens and thus comparison shopping links have never been important for us (hard to compare when you have no MPN or similar identifying numbers)
          • Mid-year we tightened up all our search engine terms using the Ebay toolset and probably received a small amount of organic search lift as a result
All that said, without question our traffic results for the first nine months show a similar wave-like curve to the one cited in the Ecommerce Bytes article you listed (Seller Shows Strange Traffic Pattern on eBay). We will continue to track this.

So I again thank you for opening my eyes a bit to the underlying traffic patterns that were affecting me even as our sales were growing due to other reasons). That said, it still does not change my recommendation that the opening poster learn the lay of the land using Ebay tools (and audience) first to learn what works and what doesn't, prior to opening his own ecommerce shop. With two-plus years of Ebay sales under our belts, we were better able to optimize our own ecommerce site when we launched it this past summer. It has been gratifying to see that on several weeks our own site's sales have surpassed those of our Ebay store. In time, as our list of 550 regular customers grows, the homegrown sales should regularly exceed what we earned on Ebay, even though Ebay of course has millions more regular visitors than our small niche store will ever have. Ebay is good for learning. But once you know your customers and the business better, having one's own site is better. My sense from the opening poster and his follow-up questions was that he is still learning the ropes in the online retail business, thus my recommendation to try Ebay and its training wheels first.

          All the best,
          Islander9

PS: I see from your Facebook link that you worked at Ebay at some point. Or is that an indication that you had a retail presence on Ebay? Either way, it's interesting context for our comments. Cheers!

You should probably start with Ebay although I think their fees are very high. After you start making some money consistently then you can start your own website. I have several dropshippers that do not allow Ebay sellers so I don't have a lot of competition from other Ebay sellers when I sell on my website.

    Hi,

I have lots of experience with ebay and have advised many people how to go from a bedroom ebay seller to a full e-commerce retailer.

I advise people to use ebay at the beginning to build a customer list, gain credibility and then as my customer list grows I then point them to my website (via email marketing, offering discount codes for buying direct etc) so at this stage I am only using ebay as a marketing tool! some sales will still come via ebay but eventually it will be overtaken by your ecommerce site. You don't need to spend money on adwords but see it like this...

    - Ebay, build a customer list, raise awareness
    - Ecommerce site, resell to existing customers, grow organically from this.

*** Tip of the day ***

When creating a header image for your ebay shop, you cannot add a link to your website but what you CAN do is add your company phone number in BIG LETTERS, taking calls from potential buyers who you can then process via your website and save your ebay fees!

    Hope that helps

      Hope that helps
overall most of people choosing EBAY as newbie in eCommerce.

    I'd go eBay.

But you have to do it right!

I have a free eBook on my website (PM me if you' like it) that will teach you how to rank your eBay listing high.

My 'claim to fame' is that I teach how you can sell 100% of your listings FOR A PROFIT.

It's unfortunate that people ever lose money on items --- or even have an unsold item.

You don't need to do that!

In fact, you can-- and SHOULD know EXACTLY how much money you make on an item BEFORE you list it.

Thanks again..--- and eBay is the way to go--- by faaaaar.

        Hey!

I appreciate the plug.... I've been teaching/studying eBay for years and picking apart their material and their tricks (AND LIES!)

I think I've compiled a good resource that has helped my students be quite successful as well as myself ... That's why I have the foundational eBook completely free... The fun (and money making contest eBook/community one) is paid, but the foundational one I give for free!

        Again,

        Thanks for the plug!

    Hi punyaviramgun,

If you want to have an eCommerce website of your own, then start it. You know, it is good to have your own site for branding purposes and in my opinion it easy to optimize and advertise it. Both have disadvantages and advantages, to make you decide on these you have to list all the pros and cons of the two.

To make it on Ebay have to buy low sell higher. The real issue is you have to have a product that buyers want and if you are new seller takes a while because you have to earn a reputation as being a good seller with a good product. If you have this then people will buy/bid on your auctions.Pm'd you.

hi friend, i have checked my pm but not yet reply it.
I sure do appreciate it - and I'm sure you can see that the tips I have in my free eBook are very helpful. If you like that you'll even LOVE my 1000 dollar a week eBook.

        But, enough about that.

If you truly want to dominate your competition - see what they're doing. You can't do much about the market worth of the item you sell - but you can UNDERCUT their strategy. So long as you're making a profit, of course.

Remember - all decisions are made via numbers.

And I thank you all for reading my free eBook. Feel free to share it with others - it's something I've been teaching/compiling/studying for years with GREAT success. And if you implement those strategies you'll see that you can not only RANK higher, but sell more often as well.

My big push and pitch is this:

YOU CAN sell 100% of your items FOR A PROFIT!

If you have EVER not sold an item - OR if you have ever taken a loss on an item, then you need to read my free eBook. I can help you out.

Again, thanks for the plugs and the kind words of you readers. Perhaps I'll host a free webinar on this soon if there is some interest?

As I responded to your reply PM.And looking at your Ebay listing. It is difficult to buy a product for $9-$10 then price it at a Buy It auction on Ebay with your price being the highest price than any others of the exact item.Even if you get a Buy It which would happen if it was a high sought after product which it's not you still would make little money after fees.
I suggested to find items unique to Asia as I am guessing from your location .

DO BOTH!!! Think about it...You open the ebay store (which takes very little to ZERO marketing) everytime someone makes a purchase put your ebay store name along with your website name on the receipt.....With the ebay store being so time consuming you can be marketing your website getting you (HOPEFULLY) double sales! (sorry if I typed that a little funny I just woke up lol)

You may start with eBay and after you get more incomes, you can develop a e-Commerce website. These are both very cost effective ways to sell and promote your products & services 24 hours a day.
You should also consider creating a m-Commerce website to reach customers who browse your website from mobile devices.
