Although I am a newbie myself when it comes to websites
    I have heard people mention
-using the social media leverage eg. facebook
-adding your website to your signature and posting regularly in other forums
this would create backlinks to your website, which is what google likes and will rank you higher for that

    the above are free

What types of products are you selling? Do they already sell well online on OTHER peoples sites? Are you priced competitively (equal or better then your competition?)

If so, I would forget about SEO for now and focus on driving in converting traffic.

Google Shopping: set up an account TODAY and bid .01 cents per click

theFind: set up a daily product feed to go to them (it's FREE)

Bing Shopping: set up an account TODAY (it's FREE)

Blog ads: look for targeted blogs within your niche and inquire about adverting. Ask for a one week trial and track your conversions with analytics for eCommerce.

REMEMBER: these forms of advertising will only work IF you are priced competitively.

    Good Luck!

Exactly, Some people are finding better conversions through advertising compared to tons of SEO work

I like to think of SEO as the icing on the cake. Since it takes a lot of time and money for SEO to work you want to be driving traffic with advertising (I'd put in Adwords too) and comparison sites like mentioned above.

With the profits you can strategically invest in SEO (I briefly wrote about this over at this post) which is often very much worth doing. Sure the conversion rate is much lower but with more traffic comes more sales. I've personally had one case where high rankings in SEO tripled revenue!

These are all excellent ideas IF you are in the US. Othewise Google is a can of worms and Bing won't even look at you. The Find has become extremely selective in who they will let on board these days and adsense is incredibly expensive for most ecommerce niches. Thus SEO and blogging are really key for many just starting out imo.

If your products are suitable for visual demonstration then open a YouTube account and make some videos of the products in action.

Get the basics of SEO done yourself:

Choose a good domain name with keywords inside it.
    Use friendly urls.

Make sure all your Meta Titles are unique and describe the page.

Make sure all your Meta Descriptions are unique so Google make pick them up and use them as the SERP snippet.

Make sure all your image names describe the image and are not meaningless.

Make use of the Alt Attribute as inform the search engines what the image is about.

    Sign Up for Google Local.

That would be a good start and all free of charge.

    Hope that helps.

    Alec.

You should be branding on every social network around and promoting your site and products on ever social network. I'm always amazed at how highly youtube videos rank. You should make reviews or your products, get people to make testimonials for your products and for your site. There's some great deals on fiverr for promoting your site as well. Some people aren't thrilled with fiver deals or their performance but I like them. I like buying back links, pres releasses, having people create link wheels and link pyramids, buying views, likes and subscribers on social netowrks, buying higher alexa ranking.
