I see that many people use Wordpress for their e-commerce stores, have you noticed that Wordpress based sites rank lower or are harder to rank than sites using OsCommerce, BigCommerce, etc?

  • I use Joomla, its way more intuitive on the backend and support is phenomenal.
  • i don't think so. i have wordpress site for ecommerce, and i have good position on google with my niche. you just optimize it
  • what makes you think so, can you share with me your findings?

    • because i have ecommerce site with wp. and it have good ranking on google.
  • This sounds a little vague and too general. Please give specifics.
  • Thanks for the responses--I currently have several Wordpress sites and the rankings fluctuate up and down on those (I know this happens) but I also have another site with BC and the rankings on that one seem to be far better with much less work.

I believe that some of the platforms such as BC, Joomla, etc might have better back-end setups that makes the whole SEO process a little easier and was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?
  • I think wordpress is actually SMILED upon in the rankings.

It's why I tend to flock to it. There are some very robust SEO plugins that I utilize that help maximize my SEO effectiveness on-site..

However, I do find it incredibly ironic that there are some platforms (like blogger) that NEVER rank high on Google - even though it's a Google product.

    Weird.

  • Jonet, How old are these sites?

    • I have had the sites for 1-2 years I've owned the wordpress site the longest.

Its true (This is purely based on my experience. I don't have any other valid points to prove this)

IMHO, Google considers wordpress sites as blog/general websites. For Commercial Intent keywords Google may be giving importance to eCommerce platforms than WP.

    • This is exactly what I am experiencing and the reason why I posted this, I am not sure if it is a SURE thing but from my testing I do believe that G does factor this into it's algorithm when ranking sites.
  • I used to use WP for about 200 niche stores, very easy to manage and for the most part, did well in regards to the relationship between my sites and Google and other SE's.
  • They are harder to rank I find but this can be a problem solvable if there is a clear and well tuned link building strategy in place.
