Hi guys I have a small jewelry store. i sell all the basics rings diamonds, pendants, watches. Some of the jewelry is high end. My question is it hard to sell expensive jewelry online(2k-50k) with no brand name. Will it be hard for me to compete with the big online jewelers since im not a brand name. Just curious if i should focus my effort on a different niche that is easier as I don't think i currently have the budget to compete in that niche, but i do want to get into the eCommerce business. What are your suggestions?

    It is definitely hard to sell big ticket items online without a brand. In the watch segment there are some e-tailers that are moderately successful selling branded watches with big discounts.

      Well, I agree with the above statement. Go for SEO, your jewelry products could even get sell at high prices even without any branding.

      I don't agree. There is actually no market that is saturated especially the clothing market because people buy new clothes for occassion or just to catch up with the trend.

    Yes, jewelry is hard, but with Jewelry you have intrinsic value with the gems, precious metals, cuts, clarity, sizes, etc.

    So - if you're great at targeting/ selling the VALUES of the items for those higher prices, then the brand wouldn't matter so much.

      I agree with ADE over here. If you can drive the focus to the quality of the inventory, as opposed to the brands therein, you should be able to do OK for yourself.

    I do promote Jewelry stores online, from my experience I can tell stores that seems to be a reliable and established online can make sales.

    e.g. if you going into such a business online, I will say go the extra mile to prove to users you are an established business not a newbie.

    Security & Privacy should be one of your first concerns as well as build a name for your website online.

    It will take a while for your website and name but I think if you are showing a physical,actual store you operate it goes a long way for credibility.So your site should show your store address and pics of your store and maybe friendly staff or you as owner.I would rather buy from you than a average joe with no physical store and if your prices are good.
    And why go into a different niche stick with what you know.And check out some Warriors here I'm sure one of our finest can set you up with a great ecommerce site.

      Agree with the above two comments regarding having a physical store. I've made inquiries with several big and small brand jewelers and they all want a physical store with a repair/support service. They want to keep their brand high end and ensure their end customers get a great service which makes complete sense.

      I have personally bought 4 figure priced jewellery online but I had already looked and made my decision in their store - just made the purchase on their website.

      I know for a fact that jewellery is very high margin though. A local jewellery store I know would have '80% off' sales all year round!

      Another angle would be try using affiliates through Commission Junction or another site like that if you do setup an Ecommerce site.

      The setup cost might be a little high, but affiliates could send a ton of traffic to your site. Some will buy and you pay the commission and most won't buy, but you could try to cultivate some of the non-buyers to sign up for a newsletter or email list by giving away a free report or something and then market to them on the backend. And if the sale happens to occur outside the cookie term window, you wouldn't pay any commission out to affiliates.

      Just a thought.

    There is a fantastic site called diamonds usa dot com that sell diamonds from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars BUT they have a good USP which is they are cutting out the middle man so you can get diamonds at far cheaper prices than a retailer.
    There are other sites offering similar USP's.
    I guess you need to determine you own USP - maybe family owned, personal service, affordable prices, guarantee's, friendly and helpful, etc...
    You don't have to be the cheapest to succeed but you do need to clearly identify what your USP is to tell customers why they should buy from you.

    My brain is boiling with ideas and possibilities here..!
    You can certainly have a cut of the pie, you are not asking for the whole cake here are you, but you are simply wondering if there might be a way for you to increase your jewelry shop sales and to that I will have to say that Yes, it is completely possible.

    My main concern here is what your commitment to this idea really is, and when I mention that I will have to use the word: Budget. Because, yes possibilities are endless and if you can find a niche or a crowd to talk to about your experience and items, etc They will listen and simply buy from you.

    I personally have invested in jewelry and even today I continue to import some nice pieces from Thailand and India so jewelry is a real, huge red hot niche online, with lots of hungry buyers, it is only a matter of finding an interesting and unique way to promote and sell this pieces and that is when my brain got filled with ideas.. lol

      With a bricks and mortar store you have a huge inbuilt image advantage to go into online selling.

      As the first two posts quoted say, you don't have to have branded products to make sales. Mauri has introduced two more ideas, one is to make your own brand. It does not have to be known worldwide; if it sounds impressive, it will be much better than no brand at all.

      His second good idea is to import jewelry. As a retailer you would already know the huge margins in jewelry, but you almost certainly only know the huge margins you get when you buy from wholesalers. Imagine the extra margin you can get if you buy direct from the manufacturer!

      Thailand and India both have huge jewelry industries, with a big majority in India being home workshops. There are plenty of those in Thailand too, as well as some substantial large scale factories.

      To deal with the home workshops you will need to visit the country to be sure of what you are getting. That can be time consuming. I know one very successful importer who would visit India twice a year and personally inspect the goods and supervise the loading of the shipments.

      A better alternative may be to buy from Hong Kong or Taiwan. Mainland China has a huge industry but most of the factories are large and you may not find them so easy to deal with.

      On the other hand, Hong Kong and Taiwan have many well established small jewelry businesses. Many of them are willing and able to make small runs of custom designed items.

      If you want your own designs made, just be aware that there is a strong possibility that they will be copied and sold to other importers. There are ways to minimize that risk.

      There is almost no risk of intellectual property theft if you buy your own design items in Taiwan, using the sourcing site and methods I teach. In fact I don't know of any other site anywhere in the world that offers the same level of protection.

      Quality from Taiwan will astound you. I know, I used to import jewelry from there, as well as other products when I was running my importing business which I started in 1987. I am now retired due to health problems.

    I wouldnt ditch trying just because it is a competitive niche, or if you dont have a brand. I would focus more on trying to score a few hits for the best keywords you can find and get yourself in front of an audience. You can span out to facebook and list your products there linking back to your website. The possibilities are endless with what you could try to get your products out there.

    Start working on building up great reviews. You might want to look at using a 3rd party review system, so it lends more credibility to your store vs. an inhouse one you control.

    With your background in the trade, I think you have an advantage going into this niche vs. starting with something that you are not as familiar with. As much as I can tell, there are a lot of people looking for jewelry items online.

    Online is a great way for you to reach new clients. Once they've found your site, you can interact with them in other ways like over the phone, and via email to build enough trust to purchase higher end items.

    If you are interested, I would suggest, as a first step, to check out the websites of other smaller independent high end jewelers to see how they operate. All the best.

    Make sure you have a great looking store front. Selling expensive jewleery won't be easy with a regular $50 theme unless its modified a lot. I feel when you sell premium products the store should have a 'premium' look to it.

    There are only 2 methods to help you.
    1 Selling the most expensive jewellery online
    or
    2 Selling the cheapest jewellery online.

    Provide value for your customer, don't just want to earn money from them.

    Price is the most important thing you need to think when you selling the physical products.

    Back in the day I bought jewelry from the USA and sold it on eBay in Australia where I live.

    I got my jewelry from Bidz.com

    I made some good coin but it got compeditive and I moved onto products with bigger profit
    margins.

    I don't know how jewelry sells on eBay these days but even if you buy it from bidz.com and then sell it offline you'll still make money.

    I currently get a 3-5 sales a week on $40-$150 jewelry items out of 251 listings on ebay. And I just started building my own store up. I havent put too much effort into it so far and im surprised at the almost passive income im getting.

    nowadays people do so much research and comparison shopping online. so they know what something is worth and if they can buy it online for their price point they will. but if they see a pair of diamond earrings online for say $250 versus $600 in a shop they will buy it online because 1) they are saving money 2) think they are smart (why should they pay retail when they can buy wholesale? even though most likely online they are paying slightly under retail and above wholesale). 3) some people are just intimidated going into a jewelry shop as some retailers are snobs to them if they think you are just there to window shop.

    Reading all the posts, there are many good ideas. I'd like to take you into a different direction of thinking.

    1) I'm assuming that you want to go into online retail to generate more sales from your products (that's obvious).
    2) Don't try to become an online retailer.

    What you need is to do local online marketing. Using yelp.com, Google reviews, get a Google business listing, Yahoo! business listing, all the business listings you can for your area.

    Build a quality websites that screams classy! Check out rolex's site, omega's site! My god it makes you want to get those watches regardless of the price! Do not cheap out on the design and look. Also, make sure your web designers accommodate for SEO of the pages. This just has to be a well structured website - that's all. Don't count on pure page content to drive your business.

    There is only ONE GOAL you should be trying to achieve as a high-end jeweler - more foot traffic! You want people to find you online and drive to your store! That is how you will measure success.

    On you website, you should provide a beautiful display of models that you carry. Don't build a simple e-commerce store. Make it feel like a million bucks! Also spend a couple of thousand on it.

    So far we've established your goal and the basics of what you need from your site.

    Next, make explanatory videos of jewelry. Not individual designs, but rather explain how to choose a diamond. Explain clarity, color, carat weight. Explain different precious stones in videos (and make sure those videos are hosted on your site). Become a knowledge base. Make videos for your site and create a YouTube channel (and make the videos feel like a million bucks, too - don't just put a camera in front of your hands and spin around a ring or a watch.)

    All of this will accomplish one goal - more foot traffic to your store. You want people coming for your custom work, for your fine jewelry. People shopping online look for deals. They look for 30%-40% off prices they see in stores! You and I both know that fine jewelry is worth the price tag and you don't want to make your brand look cheap. Stick your prices and build awareness of the fact that you are there.

      Thank you LynxForte for such a positive and helpful post. I agree that what you suggest could well be the direction that could lead the OP to bigger and better things.

      In marketing surveys it is usual to find that price is well down the list of importance in making buying decisions. There is no doubt that many people shop on the basis of price alone, particularly online, but there is also a huge market there for more discerning buyers. Also snobs.

      I mention snobs because most big brand fashion goods, jewelry, perfume, etc., sell because of the high price. If the price is too low the goods are perceived as being inferior quality.

      A friend who was a top entrepreneur, really big time, once decided to sell his Rolls Royce because it was constantly being vandalized. Being a very good salesman he decided he could sell it himself. His ads brought no response, so he lowered the price; still no response. When another price reduction proved fruitless he gave in and handed the car to a Rolls Royce dealer who sold it within a week for 30% more than my friend's original asking price.

      In my own importing business I had no difficulty taking away the bulk of the market in a particular niche from a business that "owned" that niche. I was selling a superior quality at nearly double the price into what was supposedly a price conscious market.

      Incidentally I obtained that superior quality by replacing my local manufacturer with one in China. Sad, but true.

      I think this is one of the best posts in the entire thread, and really stretches out something very simple that I was going to suggest:

      Build your own brand.

      Come up with a website design that "screams classy," as the above post suggests. Build a unique brand experience, and market it locally. You can also look into content marketing for online purposes -- it's surprisingly cost-effective, and could be really great for a "lifestyle" brand such as yours would be.

    But if you can make something unique, something different then surely it can give you some good results, but you should first grow your community use social sites and specially pinterest which can help you a lot in this niche
    All major brands were also unknown like you but they did something different launched some attractive things and maintained quality and grew

      You have what every online marketer does not have. You have built in history. You have been in your store for X number of years. You have instant credibility! You have instant real world advertising, at little cost. IE. add your website address to your billing, mailers, business cards, store front etc. - word of mouth is currently your best advertising, and it works online as well!

      In the case of a brick and mortar, you literally can build it and they will come! It may not be thousands a day but it will well beyond pay for itself.

      You want to design your page around what you already have, your printed materials etc. Build continuity between your real world, and online business.

      If you can't tell, YOU are the client I look for on a daily basis. Brick and mortar to cyber are the easiest sites to develop. everything is there, you just have to put all the pieces together, and go from there.

        I posted earlier in the thread about buying good quality jewelery from Taiwan or Hong Kong.

        Since then I have been doing my regular revision of my book and because jewelery and clothing have been big topics on the forum, I used those categories for my searches as I updated my experience on the safe sourcing sites that I recommend.

        I found a central European jewelery manufacturer who makes exquisite items, and I did a search for them on eBay and Amazon, where I could not find anything like those pieces.

        Having imported jewelery for years when running my importing business, I know a good product when I see it.

        Now before anyone asks, I am sorry, it is my policy that I don't recommend sources. If they turn out to be unsatisfactory I don't want to be responsible. Each person has to do their own research and due diligence.

        The point I am making is that the tunnel vision that leads most buyers to search for suppliers in China only is depriving many entrepreneurs of some unique opportunities.
