Thats interesting, but Australia is not that far (relatively speaking) from China. It is a different ballgame with US and Europe.

1 business day is amazing. Though a delivery to US would take longer. I usually get my orders from china in 2-3 weeks via airmail.

I have done it for years - the company I partner with are good , they ship with EMS all over the world with very few problems - the only head ache I have is when they close for 7-10 over the Chinese new year

I ordered 1 clear TPU case for my galaxy note2 from the far east. It was approx $4usd shipped! How the heck can they do that???

Very fast moving logistic operations and messy pricing structure. - For many items, you pay based on volume L*W*H. A clear phone case is very thin and thousands could probably be placed in a 1 CBM square shipping container which is then priced at maybe $300 USD for air mail from China to the U.S., which make your actual item cost pennies if a seller is sending out a large amount of items every couple of days.

The reason why it takes many companies 10-20 business days is because they hold packages until they have enough items to be sent out where they can get a good deal on shipping because they are shipping an amount that they have determined to be profitable.

Its very possible that an item in Shenzhen can get picked up at 8 AM, dropped off a local hub by 10 AM, get to Hong Kong by 1 in the afternoon, shipped out of the country the next day and in 20 hours be at a USPS shipping hub in the United States. Because my business (for example) pays more out of our own expense for expedited shipping and we have good volume, we can get items from our warehouse to someone in Omaha, NE in 5-7 business days at a price that is still profitable to us.

  of course it's feasible. There are thousands of sellers from China selling to USA, UK, CAN, AU.
  
  They have cut throat prices and offer cheap shipping but that doesn't mean
  you can't compete with them.
  
  There are enough buyers (millions) on eBay that will buy locally off YOU, rather than
  a supplier in HK or China because of the following reasons
  
  - They simply don't trust Chinese sellers even if they have a excellent rating (old school thinking)
  
  - The want the item quicker than it takes to ship overseas (less than 3 days)
  
  -They prefer local pickups and pay cash face to face if you offer this as a option
  
  -They prefer sellers in their country only because it keep the money at home ( so they think lol)
  
  -How about this one, display your phone number, they guaranteed to speak to a English speaking
  person not a Asian that has broken English. (not being racists).
  
  There are heaps of reasons.
  
  How do I know this, because I made thousands of dollars per week using this
  exact strategy. Don't think competition is bad, open you mind to new possibilities on how you can serve the customer better.
  
  People bought from me not because I was the cheapest but I went beyond what
  they were use to and serve their needs better.

When is the Chinese New Year and do most of the drop shippers close? I need to find this out. My orders take 6-10 days via China DHL. I can go for a much cheaper option that is about half that takes 3 weeks--and I do that for freebie items etc.

  One thing I haven't understood is the big appeal of: 'I would rather have it now for less profit' over: "I can wait longer for more profit'
  
  Dropshipping is great for convenience sake, but as business owners, aren't we all looking for cutting costs/increasing profits?
  
  It's all about delayed gratification= greater rewards.
  
  If I can wait an extra week or 2 for an extra 50% in profit margin on my items, why would that not appeal to people?

  I'm actually asking for insight. I'm not knocking tactics. I don't buy the whole "It costs less to do it" because researching the items market worth and sell-ability before selling the item is completely feasible, and you KNOW the profit before selling--- Or the whole "I don't want to go to the post office -- story"

  Delayed gratification has always yielded higher profits.

Now the Spring Festival is coming.Many China suppliers will have a almost 7 days holiday.No one sends the products and the DHL will also have a holiday.You should think twice if you want to buy during this time as your product will delay.

I think that an open mind and making a market work for you is very important...know who your customers are and where they live...

I personally only sell and direct ship from manufactures in the US...I found it works better for me because of the niches that I am in and it wouldn't work for me to ship or sell outside of the US...like I said it depends on the niche and products...

Explore China Sam, You leaving a lot of money on the table trust me on this.

My first experience in China blew my mind and I quickly realized why they are
the manufacturing Juggernaut they are today. If you get a chance to go over
there do it. Your mind will spin because you'll see things in China for $5-$10
that are selling in Wal-Mart for $200-$300 then you understand why all the
big companies in the world source and buy from China.

There is no reason why you can not do the same as them just in your own local
market and your own product.

In a nut shell China is where the big profits are made.

When you import and CONTROL the goods you CONTROL the price.

You already know the market price for the item from your research right.

So you know if you bought a freestyle bike for $39 ( I imported these and sold
thousands) and the market price was $299 at the very cheapest price, then you
know that you can undercut everyone @ 199 in your market and still make a killing,
and sell these by the container like I did. (You can fit a lot of freestyle bikes in a container)

So you can screw your competitors and drop your price until they either disappear
or move onto another product that your not selling.

because guess what.... they're buying from a middle man

You want to be the last man standing not the one going broke.

It's just business, nothing personal.

When you buy from middle men your always buying at inflated prices.

I know what Sam means

In one of my niches, I use a Chinese supplier - used them for over 4 years now and (touch wood) 98% of all the head aches are now gone, but in the past they would change prices on items without telling me, (then change them back again a week later) change catalog numbers on items, without telling me - ship some items immediately and ship others 10 days later (driving customers mad who have the 'I want it now" mentality)

While the Chinese are now the world's manufacturers some of their business skills are still being learned.

I cannot ignore the great price deals they give me but I tell ya some years I was nearly driven mad but (some) of their in-explicable business practices and having a US based drop shipper who gets how US customers expect their orders to go , etc is a god send. Sometimes the head aches were just not worth the extra savings

At last, someone who has woken up to the huge advantages of direct importing v dropshipping.

First let me say you do not have to buy container loads. In the importing business I ran for 22 years, selling B2B in 4 countries via franchisees, the shipments were often less than $500 value, and almost daily my franchisees received parcels costing less than $100.

There were plenty of much bigger orders, but the point is you do not have to buy big to get factory prices if you know how to do it. (I explain how in my book.)

Dropshipping suppliers have done a great job convincing people that importing is extremely complex, but in reality it is ridiculously easy provided you don't try to learn all the rules and regulations yourself.

On the Internet I have seen for sale too many "How To Import" programs that help maintain the fiction that importing is complex, because those books, video courses etc., are themselves complex.

Do yourselves a favor and try importing a small amount of a product direct from a reliable factory and start laughing all the way to the bank, but as I point out on my website, there are traps for the unwary.

The Lunar Chinese New Year start on Feb 10, howver most people in China closes down their business one week before for their staff to travel back to their home town. Official holidays is only 2 days but since this year it fall on a Sunday, the official holidays end on a Wednesday 12 Feb. It is common for folks in China to take leave and be home for the whole one week. Do not expect much commercial activities until the 18th Feb. However company with International operations would most likely have staff on standby according to official calenders. DHL/Fedex/UPS would most likely keep their operation going from Wednesday 13th onwards. We uses DHL ourselves and find them very reliaable and efficient.

Customs and VAT can be a problem in some countries. For example Finland just lowered the treshold this year and now you have to pay customs duty for all imported goods from outside the EU that have a value of over 20 euros. If you are using dropshipping your customers have to handle the customs and VAT. I think many people are not very happy about that. Of course not every parcel gets caught.

Interesting thread. I've been looking for a reliable Chineese dropshipping company (Various types of products) but it is hard knowing which ones are trustworthy and especailly what to do with returns etc.

Any ideas on where to find a good and reliable drop shipper or list of drop shippers?

And what do you do with possible returns?
