Your opinions about Bigcommerce vs Opencart

Hi Guys

I'm in the process to setup an ecommerce site and I don't know what way to go.

I like to ask the opinion of some experienced people about this:

My site will have around 30/40 products.

I've been playing with Bigcommerce and like their platform however
their support from what I've been reading online is really bad.
I checked Opencart and it don'y look bad, could make a nice site.

Now my problem is, if I go with Bigcommerce they will handle the
technical problems with the site.

If I go with Opencart I'll have to handle the problems and as this is opensource
I don't know how stable it is or if this gives to much trouble.

That's why I like to ask people that are familiar with both platforms
what they think about one vs other.

Thank's
Jorge

      Thank's for your input.

      I think I'll give it a try.
You think this is ok to run OC on a hostgator baby plan (as an Addon)?

I have had no problem with BigCommerce support--in fact they bend over backwards to help. Not every "technical problem" can be handled by yourself or by anyone else. But for peace of mind and a whole lot less complications, my money goes to BigCommerce.
You seem to have tried them already, maybe with a free trial. It may be worth it to try both on separate websites and see how things go. See which is more compatible with your skills and time advantages.

I agree with Julia regarding BC. Their support is great. I pay $25 a month and get as much support as I want and at the start I called them a lot. They are not supposed to help with non standard stuff and they do it all the time. Yeah, on occasion I get a clinker of a support person but for the most part these guys (and gals) are really helpful. Remember, $25 a month a 7 days a week of support! That is a big deal.

For 30 - 40 products I would go with BigCommerce. I have never had an issue with support. I had one customer that had issues with them and guess what? She was clueless and when it was all said and done, it was something she did wrong (let her domain name expire). Of course, if all 30 to 40 of your products are the same category, check out Shopify as well. If you don't need sub-categories, they work great.

I am playing around with Opencart right now. I have also been impressed with Prestashop. Only bad thing with Opencart is you will have to buy or install a few modules and change the code to make it display some things properly. It is pretty light weight so should work fine on a shared hosting account.

One thing I like about BigCommerce and Shopify, is they are PCI-DSS Level 1 compliant. So if you ever go to your bank for a merchant account (which you shouldn't but thats another talk), you can show them they are in Visa's Directory of PCI Compliant shopping carts.

(which you shouldn't but thats another talk)

Now I'm curious, why you made this statement?
Is there anything that I must know?

      Thank's

I'm using opencart, been happy so far.

It was a bit of a mission transferring sites/databases, but now everything is working great.
    Would recommend opencart.

      Hi

I read in some forums that Opencart get hacked too many times.
Have you had any problems with it?

For me its definetly bigcommerce. I have one ecommerce site running with bigcommerce and its just the design and the functions are much better. Opencart is more like for starters, but if you want to get professional, bigcommerce is the way to go.

    Good luck with your venture,

Both have their pro's and cons. I've been working with OC for the past 11 months now and have gotten to know the ins and outs of OC. Great platform.

I've started to used Big Commerce on another client site and from what I've seen so far Big Commerce is not actually that bad. Whether OC or Big Commerce, you need support whether from Big Commerce themselves or a freelancer either way, you need a specialist to take care of the mods. I'm ok with my own customization but sometimes I will hold my hand up and say "Way out of my depth, lets get in a OC/Big Commerce specialist". Don't be cheap, time is money. GL
