OSCommerce, ZenCart, and OpenCart are all open source carts.
Hosting: Simple Helix is a Magento-optimized host, and they're noticeably faster than many out there. 2-3 of our customers use them.
    They're very affordable too.
Zunicore, Peer1.coms public cloud hosting service is absolutely top-tier stuff. Peer1, Fyi, hosts WordPress.com, Softpedia, and Virgin Media's Games, among many others. They're in like the top .5% of hosts.
Hostgator's Business Plan level- it includes an SSL certificate and dedicated IP, which is very nice for eCommerce. Plus, 24/7 tech support based in America, cPanel for one-touch install of Magento, WordPress, Joomla, etc., and reliable service. I've had more than 100 domains and sites hosted by them at a time and never had an issue or outage.

I'd use Magento and put is on a specialized Magento host. Using it on a cheap host with that many products is a dumb idea. Magento is by far the best free solution out there right now and will continue to be for the future. Plus the crazy number of extensions available for Magento are invaluable.

Magento is rather a complex cart. You could use something simpler, like OpenCart, PrestaShop or VirtueMart (Joomla component)

Joomla Virtuemart would be the best choice to start an online ecommerce store. Prestahop can be considered as the second opinion.

it is all depends on your shopping cart requirements, how many products, customization, payment gateways, etc..I like woocommerce to start out if you don't have many products to sell..then I like magento because they have great community supports..or online service shopify if you don't like to install script by yourself..

any other open source for creating online store which can handle about 4k products which hosting services will be suitable.
Prestashop on Bluehost.com, it is a one click install.

Prestashop might be the best open source shopping cart there is, I did try Opencart but found troubles with importing products.

    Hope this helps!

Magento is a resource intensive script and normal shared hosts may not be suitable. A specialist magento host is a must, as already suggested.

4000 products is nothing great, other open source ecommerce script should be fine. Download and set up a few and decide only after you see them working.

I think it really depends upon your skills and preferences, or your budget to hire skill for that preference. All platforms have things that need to be worked through and have been worked through. It will take persistance and thouroughness on your part, and/or
help from someone experienced with your platform to work through the kinks.

Continuity is another thing to consider. Suppose you hire someone to build and they leave for whatever reason. Will they leave you with good documentation so it's easier for someone else to continue? Will it be easy and easy on your budget to hire someone else? (Another factor for choosing a more popular platform?)
